Identification
13 - 14.5cm. A highly distinctive parrotbill:
- Ash-grey crown to uppermost mantle
- Chestnut-black lores and forehead, continuing in long supercilium reaching the nape
- Olive-brown upperparts, wings dull coloured
- Olive-grey, long and graduated tail
- Chestnut throat and upper breast, colour extending to malar area to cheek and upper ear-coverts, lower ear-coverts grey
- Grey breast and neck side
- Dull greyish-buffy flanks, belly and undertail coverts
- Pinkish or rose-coloured bill
Sexes similar. Juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
Endemic to central China (south Gansu and extreme northern Sichuan).
Distribution poorly known. Recent records from Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve and Tang Jia He National Nature Reserve in Sichuan (2007). Classified as vulnerable.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
This species was formerly placed in the genus Paradoxornis.
Habitat
Bamboo in open coniferous forest. Recorded at 2440 - 3050m.
Behaviour
Reported feeding on insects.
Usually seen in pairs, family parties or fast-moving groups of up to 15 birds.
Probably breeding from July to August. No other information.
No documented movements but may wander around in response to flowering and die-off of bamboo.
