Africa south of the Sahara:
Western Africa: Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola
Eastern Africa: Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi
Southern Africa: Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Sometimes considered a subspecies of Blue-breasted Quail[2] and placed in genus Excalfactoria. Formerly placed in genus Coturnix.

Habitat

Wet grasslands and cultivated areas.

Behaviour

Breeding

They nest in a ground scrape. The clutch consists of 6-9 olive-green or pale yellowish-brown eggs which are incubated for 16 days.

Diet

The diet includes grass and weed seeds, green vegetation, insects and molluscs.
