Identification

17cm.

Male

  • Pale turquoise-green or yellow bulbous narial wattles and bare skin over mandible base
  • Dark brown lores and side of face
  • Dark brown crown with coppery-green sheen
  • Honey-brown nape, mantle and upper back
  • Pale sulphur-yellow back and rump
  • Honey-brown tail and upperwing
  • Silky or glassy sulphur-yellow underparts
  • Dark brown eye
  • Blackish bill and legs

Female

  • Slightly larger than male
  • Lacks wattles
  • Dark olive-brown above
  • Paler, yellowish-buff underparts

Juveniles undescribed.

Distribution

Endemic to the mountains of New Guinea.
Poorly known and patchily distributed.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Two subspecies recognized[1]:

  • L. s. sericea in the mountains of New Guinea from Weyland Mountains east discontinuously to Victor Emanuel Mountains, Kubor Range, Mount Karimui and Soliabeda
  • L. s. aurora in Herzog Range and upper Jimi River in southeast New Guinea

Habitat

Montane forest at 600 - 2000m, mainly above 1200m.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds possibly almost exclusively on fruits.
Usually seen singly or in small groups in fruiting trees.

Breeding

Presumably polygynous with solitary promiscuous males. The females build and attend the nest alone.
The nest is said to be an open moss structure built in branches in vegetation. Lays 1 egg.

Movements
