Identification
Length 11-13 cm. Grey-brown head with a black line through the eye, pink throat, brown back, red bill, black legs.
Similar Species
Similar to the Common Waxbill, but with a black (not red) line through the eye.
Distribution
A small area around the Lualaba River and Lake Upemba of south-eastern DRC.
Status
There have been no published records of this species since 1950. Classified as Data Deficient by BirdLife International.2

This is a monotypic species[1].
Taxonomic status needs clarification; Dowsett & Forbes Watson (1993) include nigriloris as a subspecies of Common Waxbill E. astrild.

Grass, reedbeds and scrub.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes inverterbrates and seeds.
Breeding
It nests in a tree or shrub. Two to four white eggs are laid.
