Alternative name: Canary White-eye

Zosterops luteus

Identification

Bright yellow, white eye ring, dark beak and legs.

This is one of several species locally known as Mangrove White-eye

Distribution

Australia.

Taxonomy

There are 2 subspecies

  • Z. l. balstoni:
  • Z. l. luteus:
  • Coastal northern Australia (Kimberley to western Cape York Peninsula)

Habitat

Mangroves, but moves out to forage in adjoining monsoon scrub, dense river-edge vegetation, coastal scrub, paperbark swamps and coastal gardens.

Behaviour

They are often found in company with 3-4 different types of honeyeaters

Diet

They feed on the native hibiscus on the shore line at dawn.
