Central and South America
Central America: Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama
South America: Colombia
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- O. m. verecundus:
- Humid Caribbean lowlands of Honduras
- O. m. melanotis:
- South-eastern Honduras to Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama
Habitat
They are to be found in tropical and sub-tropical forests at heights around 450–1600 m.
Behaviour

There is little information available, but they scratch in the leaf litter probably for fallen fruit and insects.
Breeding
There is a lack of detailed information. They are thought to be monogamous. They build a lined nest excavated in the buttress roots of trees.
