Identification

60-75 cm

  • Grey-brown plumage
  • Paler head and upper neck
  • Pale blue forewing
  • Small black bill
  • Black legs

Sexes similar
Immature birds are duller

Distribution

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Rivers, freshwater lakes, swamps, freshwater marshes, high-altitude shrubland or grassland from 1,800m.

Behaviour

Nocturnal.

Breeding

It nests in grasses, in a lined nest. 6-7 cream eggs are laid.

Diet

The diet includes grasses and other plant material.
