Identification
50-61 cm Head is black with surrounding orange orbital skin with red-orange crest; pale buff underparts and maroon red with spotted buff above. Female is mottled black and rufous brown above with whitish patches; belly is greyish brown with large white markings.
Distribution
Southeast China: Resident in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian.

There are 2 subspecies.
Habitat
Coniferous or broadleaved foothill forests.
Behaviour
Cautious and secretive, feeds on forest floor or in trees. Descends to the ground before dawn, and back to dwelling trees at dusk with male flying up first and female following suit.
Vocalisation
Territorial call consists of repeated rapid burst of 5-25 notes lasting 2-8 seconds, diminishing in pitch and volume. Also utters sharp, repeated notes as "summons" calls.
