Description
'Typical' terns, with a deeply forked tail, pale grey mantle, and no crest; most (except for S. striata, S. sumatrana, S. trudeaui) also have a uniform black crown in breeding plumage with no white forehead.
Taxonomy
Sterna is a genus in the Family Laridae.
In the past, the terns in the genera Onychoprion, Sternula, Gelochelidon, Hydroprogne and Thalasseus, were formerly also placed in this genus.
