Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Pacific Islands.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 4 subspecies[1]:
- P. p. ponapensis:
- Caroline Islands (Truk and Pohnpei) - split as Purple-capped Fruit Dove by Gill and Donsker[2]
- P. p. hernsheimi:
- Kosrae (eastern Caroline Islands) - split as Kosrae Fruit Dove by Gill and Donsker[2]
- P. p. porphyraceus:
- P. p. fasciatus:
An additional subspecies graeffi is generally considred invalid[1].
Habitat
Mangroves and lowland moist forests.
