41cm.
- Black above and below
- Short pointed crest
- Bare red facial skin
- Brown iris
- Dark brown and yellow bill
- Dark legs
- Sexes alike
Distribution
Indonesia. Northern Moluccas and west Papuan islands (off New Guinea).
Taxonomy
Three subspecies recognized:
- M. f. quoyii in the North Moluccas
- M. f. freycinet on islands off of northwestern New Guinea: Waigeo and surrounding islets (Boni and Saonek), Kofiau, Kamuai, and Misool Island
- M. f. oustaleti in extreme northwestern New Guinea (western Vogelkop Peninsula) and adjacent islands, including Batanta, Salawati, and associated smaller islands
Biak Scrubfowl was formerly included in this species. Gill and Donsker include Forsten's Megapode in this species.
Habitat
Swamps, mangroves and forests.
Behaviour
They lay their eggs in a mound which is made from earth, leaves, sand and sticks.
