Asio madagascariensis

Identification

31 to 50 cm. Dark brown facial disk, black bill and orange eyes. Long dark brown ear tufts. The upper parts are black and tan, speckled with brown. The belly and breast are a light buff colour.

Distribution

Endemic to eastern Madagascar.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.

Habitat

Humid evergreen forests, dry deciduous forests.

Behaviour

Diet includes mammals such as lemurs, rats and bats; it is nocturnal.
