Taxonomy

Six subspecies recognized, sometimes split in four species:

  • Moheli White-eye
  • Madagascar White-eye
  • Z. m. menaiensis on Cosmoledo Atoll (Seychelles)
  • Z. m. maderaspatanus on Madagascar and Isles Glorieuses
  • Z. m. voeltzkowi on Europa Island
  • Aldabra White-eye
  • Z. m. aldabrensis on Aldabra and Astove islands
  • Anjouan White-eye

Kirk's White-eye was formerly included in this species.
