Identification
14-15 cm. A large bush-warbler with a long, tapering bill.
- Pale yellowish-buff to olive-yellow supercilium
- Dark lores and eyestripe
- Greyish-olive cheek and ear-coverts
- Greyish-olive crown and upperparts (including wings and tail)
- Olive-yellow underparts, brightest on chin
Sexes similar, males are slightly larger than females.
Juveniles are similar to adults but have browner back and rump and forehead and crown lighter or tinged yellowish.
Similar species
Larger than Shade Warbler and Fiji Bush Warbler. Also lacks rufous or cinnamon in plumage. Differs from Japanese Bush Warbler (subspecies cantans) by shorter tail, larger bill and olive-yellowish (not greyish) supercilium and underparts.
Distribution
Palau Islands (Babelthaup, Koror, Garakayo, Peleliu and Ngabad).
Common in its small range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Formerly placed in genus Cettia.
Habitat
Found in dense undergrowth, lianas and vine tangles in forest and along forest edges.
Behaviour
An extremely shy species, usually skulking in dense undergrowth.
Diet
Feeds on ground-dwelling invertebrates.
Forages usually solitary on ground or low down in vegetation.
