Identification
18 cm (7 in)
Adult: Grey brown above, grey crown, dark line across the wing coverts may look blue in ideal light and a white band low on the closed wing. Underside including chin, throat, and belly is pale buffy to almost white while undertail is white; head shows black lores and grey eye ring and iris.
In flight, wing upperside is pale grey on lesser and medium coverts, white on greater coverts contrasting with black flight feathers (primaries and secondaries), and outer tail feathers are white but this is only visible if the relatively long tail is spread.
Juvenile: duller but more buff overall. The upperparts are fringed buff and the wing-coverts and breast are reddish-buff or buff at the centre.
Distribution
South America: Peru and Bolivia to central Chile, east to southern Brazil and central Argentina (including both Paraguay and Uruguay); an isolated population is found in north-east Brazil.
