Identification
Length 13-14 cm; smaller than Northern Puffback and Black-backed Puffback; eyes red, legs black, upper mandible black, lower mandible pale.
Male: Head, back and tail black; wings black, grey and white; underparts whitish.
Female: Grey with white-edged wing-coverts; underparts paler than upperparts; lores white.
Similar species
Northern Puffback has an all-black bill; female is browner. Black-backed Puffback male is more boldly black-and-white; female has distinct white eyebrow.
Distribution
Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Tanzania.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Dry savanna and thicket.
Behaviour
A "skulker", keeps low in dense vegetation; joins mixed-species flocks.
Vocalization
Call is a sharp teeu.
