Identification
13cm.
- Slate-grey crown
- Cinnamon rufous mottled lores and face
- Rufous auricular patch bordered posteriorly by dusky crescent
- Dark olive upperparts
- Dusky wings with indistinct wingbars and buffy edges of remiges
- Warm buffy olive tail
- Bright cinnamon-rufous throat and broad breastband
- Yellow rest of underparts, cinnamon-olive thighs
- Long bill
Sexes similar, females slightly smaller. Juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
Andes of Colombia, eastern Ecuador, northern Peru, and western Venezuela.
Rare to locally fairly common.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Birds from the northeast of the range described as race venezuelanus but generally not accepted.
Forms a superspecies with Inca Flycatcher.
Habitat
Found in mossy cloudforest and other upper montane wet forest. Occasionally in second growth.
Occurs at 1500-2700m, most common above 1900m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on arthropods. Takes also some small fruits and berries.
An inconspicuous species, forages out of shady perches in lower canopy and mid-storey.
Often in mixed-species flocks.
Breeding
No information.
Movements
Presumably a resident species.
