Identification
40cm. A distincitve treepie:
- Liver-brown forecrown, face, throat and side of head
- Contrasting white upper nape, light grey lower nape
- Tawny-brown upperparts
- Pale grey rump and uppertail-coverts
- Black upperwing with white patch at base of primaries
- Buffy rufous breast and belly
- Long, strongly graduated tail, central feathers silvery grey with black terminal band, rest of feathers black
- Red or reddish-brown eye
- Short bill with strongly curved culmen
Sexes similar. Juveniles have more sooty head.
Distribution
Endemic to Sumatra, Indonesia.
Generally common.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
Formerly included Bornean Treepie and was then called Sunda or Malaysian Treepie.
Forms a species group with Bornean Treepie, White-bellied Treepie and Grey Treepie.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests and montanes. Tolerates secondary forest. Occurs from 400m up to 2300m.
Behaviour
Diet not know.
Usually seen in pairs or family groups.
No specific information about breeding.
