- Trogon surrucura
Identification
Length: 25cm. Southern red-bellied race superficially resembles the Blue-crowned Trogon, but no overlap in range. The northern orange-bellied race can be confused with the White-tailed Trogon.
Distribution
Restricted to south-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and far north-eastern Argentina. Fairly common to uncommon. Found in most reserves in the region.
Taxonomy
Two races: Southern nominate (T. s. surrucura) with red belly, and northern race aurantius with orange belly. The two may represent separate species.
Habitat
Forest and woodland.
Behaviour
Although a colourful bird, it can easily be overlooked because of its habit of sitting quietly for long periods. Frugivorous.
