Identification

65-70 cm.

  • White supercilium with a narrow black line below
  • Black-brown plumage
  • White streaks on upperwing, breast and flanks
  • Bluish bare skin around eye
  • Red dewlap

Juveniles are similar but have a yellowish foreneck, yellowish orbital skin and less pronounced whitish streaks on wings, breast and flanks

Similar species

Differs from Dusky-legged Guan by more contrasting supercilium, pale legs and more prominent white streaks on upperwing.

Distribution

Endemic to interior of northeast Brazil from south Maranhão east across Piauí, Ceará, Paraíba and Pernambuco, south to Alagoas, Bahia and northeast Minas Gerais.
A vulnerable species with probably fewer than 10,000 birds split in three subpopulations.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Found in dry parts of semi-deciduous forest and taller caatinga, sometimes also in campo rupestre. Can persist in selectively logged and degraded areas.
Occurs in lowlands below 1000 m.

Behaviour

Diet

Recorded to feed on seeds and fruit (eg of Ziziphus joazeiro).
Often forages on ground for fallen fruits, seeds and some insects. Also visits water to dring, especially during dry season or in years with low rainfall.
Usually in small groups of up to seven birds, more in feeding areas.

Breeding

Not much known. Juveniles recorded in mid August. The nest is made of sticks and lined with dry leaves. It's placed in trees or palms. Lays 2 to 3 white eggs.

Movements

Presumably a sedentary species with short-range movements according to food and water availability.
