Distribution

South America: found from east Peru to south-western Amazonian Brazil and central Bolivia.

Taxonomy

Clements1 sees this as a monotypic species, while others recognize salvini and maculatus

Habitat

They are generally to be found in terra firme transitional forest, where they prefer the understorey.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists of various insect species, and includes spiders, ant larvae and termites.

Breeding

They build a shallow cup nest of narrow strips of dry palm frond leaflets in a hollow palm stump. They lay a single egg which is light pink with dark maroon stripes.
