    Hi Nick, I've only seen one Common Darter so far this year so yes it is early for them. I will have to check any darters I see more carefully than normal as there does seem to be an influx of Red-veined. Hoping one will turn up in Bedfordshire as it a species missing from my county list. Tim

    Hi Nick, Red-veined Darter would be a major rarity at Paxton. Common Darter is very much more likely, though it is still quite early in the year for them. Tim

    Yes, Paul's suggestion is much better. Hairy Dragonfly is fairly common round here. Probably too early for Southern and that species is fairly distinctive. Tim

    Very unlikely to be Common Hawkers at Paxton. Despite its name it hasn't occurred in this part of the country for many years. Southern Hawker is a distinct possibility. Tim

    They may have had breeding populations in the recent past, but Lady A's certainly don't now and I'm not sure if Golden Pheasants do now either.

    Seconded. The 6.5x rather than 8.5 are probably the best choice: wider field of view and a bit brighter. Not expensive but nothing else does the job as well. During the summer these are my go-to binoculars for butterflies and dragonflies. Ok for birding in woods too. Not recommended for...

    As an added bonus Variable Damselfly is common and usually easy to see at Paxton Pits, including along the path south from the visitor centre, which is the route you would take to get to Rudd and Hayling Lake. Tim

    Is this just a Common Hawker?

    It appears to have a yellow costa (the leading vein of the wing) which I think is diagnostic of Common Hawker. Whixall Moss is a bog so the habitat is right too. Tim
