Help with a Texas bird Garden

You will do both yourself and the birds a favor if you plant things that are native to your area. One great resource in the U.S. is on the Audubon society webpage. If you google “Audubon society native plants“ you should find a link on their page that allows you to input your ZIP Code and get a...

    Screech Owl fledging time

Yep. We came home from a walk a few nights ago just before dusk to find a mob of the local songbirds harassing two adults and two fledglings. Grabbed my camera to get a couple of grainy shots. The unpictured adult was grey phase.

Feeders Experience and Questions (East Tenessee)

How long have you had your feeder up? Sometimes it can take a month or more for birds to find and regularly use a new feeder. I’m in Western North Carolina and have all the birds you mentioned as either residents or regular visitors. All of them except the Northern Mockingbird and the American...

Help for a nestbox for a Carolina wren!

I have had them use bluebird boxes before. This year to see if I could prevent them from camping in a bluebird box I put up this style of house near the roof of my porch. They seemed to prefer it rather than any of the bluebird boxes around, and raised a clutch successfully.

    How to attract insect eaters?

If you are unable to find them locally, any number of suppliers will ship them to you. Mealworms enter dormancy in cold temps (like a refrigerator), so it’s possible to buy in bulk and store them, if you have someplace suitable. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Zamora or Mindo?

My wife and I stayed a couple of nights at Septimo Paraiso two years ago, and we were quite pleased. Some decent feeders and trails on the grounds, and good facilities/food for her. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Bluebird Feeder

We've never felt a need to try and segregate the bluebirds... they hold their own at the feeders just fine. If your question is specifically for mealworms, then we've typically set a small glass bowl on the middle of a regular tray feeder. Whatever you want in the tray (for us it's typically...

    Dove/pigeon, Haiti lowlands, last week

Last week in lowland field habitat outside of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, I caught a glimpse of a flying dove/pigeon that I would appreciate help in identifying. It was a small to medium dove-shaped bird, largely light grey or light brown in color on its back, with a distinct white outer edge to...

    Bear-proofing a feeder?

I just closed on a new home today and met one of my new neighbors. Evidently the feeder-raiders of choice in this new location (western North Carolina) are not squirrels, raccoons, or deer, but black bears! I know how to protect my feeders from the normal suspects, but does anyone have...

My feeder has become TOO popular - need suggestions

Good suggestions about other possible causes. Depending where you are and how your feeder is mounted, raccoons are also a possibility. They can be quite inventive at circumventing a baffle, and are quite dexterous enough to manipulate a feeder to get food. However, even if the birds...

Best on site birding lodges in Costa Rica

We've been twice in early July, and both the weather and the birding have been fabulous. Rain, of course, but not enough to dampen our enthusiasm, and generally later in the day. I think that the later in your travel window you go the rain will get worse, but the rates in July have been good...

neighbors want us to remove bird feeders because of bird 'noise'

Another possibility would be to take the feeders in at night and put them out in the morning after some mutually-agreed-upon time. The birds will quickly learn when the food is available and be waiting for you to put it out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

neighbors want us to remove bird feeders because of bird 'noise'

Without knowing the geography of your and your neighbors' yards, I don't know if this makes sense, but could you move the location of the feeders in your yard to a location away from your neighbors? The only noise that's potentially attributable to the feeders should be in the immediate vicinity...

Recommendations for GPS maps for Ecuador?

Greetings, folks, I'll be heading to Ecuador in a few weeks and will be renting a car to get around. This will be a combination birding/sightseeing trip, so we'll be spending some time in the cities (Quito and Cuzco) and some time in more rural areas (e.g. Mindo, Otavalo, Pappallacta...

Gull ID, Outer Banks, NC, July

Is this an immature GBBG? And what diagnostic marks, if any, could I use to confirm the ID? Thanks, --dave

    need a new computer

Yep, there is a single high speed usb connection for this setup. It wouldn't be good for gaming or other things that need frequent, fast screen updates, but seems to work fine for email/office/web sorts of uses. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

    need a new computer

Take a look at USB docking stations. One brand with which I'm familiar is Pluggable. These use a single USB port (preferably 3.0) to provide the sort of connectivity you describe, and thus should work with any modern laptop. --dave Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
