    Advice on jacket and boots

I did not mean to imply anything about matching layers. Far from it. I have a very eclectic combination of various layers from synthetic to natural and pick and choose among them. When its cold and wet I usually wear medium or silk weight capilene or similar next to my skin with a fleece...

    Advice on jacket and boots

layers An interesting thread. Odd that layering and avoiding cotton like the plague are not mentioned. Here on the north coast of California, winters are cold and rainy. I have found that a GoreTex snowboarder's parka works very well. Roomy and lots of pockets. I use varying combinations...

    Night vision question

There are CCD and CMOS imagers availablel for 1.25 inch occulars so why not infra-red or "starlight" imagers? Seems like the sensor portion of the image intensifier could be made to fit onto a scope and wired to the viewing device of choice. Is there more involved with focusing infra-red than...

    tripods for shorties

Hi James, I don't know how the NeoTech legs work so I can't make a comparison. Also, I think that I got one of the last FlipLocks in about 1984. They were the "hot" tripod then. I know of several folks that have had problems with their FlipLocks and have taken them apart, washed, cleaned...

    A95 no more?

I have read the reviews at <www.dpreview.com> and everyone who has got the A620 thinks it is great. A major upgrade from the A95. Unfortunately, it seems that all of the shortcomings of my A80 have been addresed, and then some. Now I am faced with the dreaded upgrad dilema! If past pricing...

    tripods for shorties

Hi James, I find that I can compensate for my own lack of hieght by not fully extending the legs of the tripod. Also consider that a somewhat "full sized" tripod can be usefull when observing from a slope. The two fully extended legs should be down slope and the partialy exended one is up...

    Advice on minox spotting scope

I would NEVER suggest avoiding duty, but it seems like a birder could decide to sell optics to another birder in another country at cost and carry something else back on the return trip. Jim

    Eye Relief Advice?

FYI, the Vixen zoom is not that heavy and is as secure in the colett as any other 1.25 eyepiece. I moved the balance plate a scosh forward on my 701 head and achieved near neutral balance. I did not notice a significant change in ER. but then I only need 17 mm with my glasses on. That my...

    Eye Relief Advice?

By coincidence I just picke up the Orion branded Vixen Zoom and tried it out this noon viewing Humboldt Bay through my PF-65ED The most spectacular viewing was at the lowest power (16.5) It is like looking through a perfect window to the extend that I forgot I was not looking through a...

    Pentax 65mm

Test paterns here yesterday, gone today I looked at the test pattern photos and was going to comment but the backup got in the way. Now I can't find the thread. Anyway, the test photos were interesting in that resolution appeared to be about the same for all of the images but color cast and...

pentax pf-65 vs. nikon fieldscopeIII (non-Ed)

Hi David, I have viewed birds and wildlife through the Nikon Fieldscope 60 and can't really tell much difference between that and my own pf-65ED AN. I too was on the same horns of dilema before I bought the 65ED. ED glass does not guarantee a better image. Most optics are compromises and...

    DOF Question

Leif, I have never heard of "depth of focus", but you described depth of field very well. Put another way, its the distance between near and far areas that are in focus. This is proportional to the focal ratio. The eye with a binocular is like a camera with a telephoto lens.

    Pentax 65mm

Hi Birdeast, I acquired a PF65 about six months ago and recoment it. Its waterprooness provides peace of mind here in the moist northern California coast. I don't think it can match the optics of the teleview, but it is very user friendly. I have 30, 26, 20, 12 and 10 mm eyepieces for it...

Nikon 8x20 HG DCF-only one found.

Hello Manjeet, Got back from four weeks in Malaysia at the end of July. Sabah, visited friends, got adopted as part of my wifes old Peace Corps family, saw great birds. Wonderful time. I think your country's greatest blessing is her people!

    701RC2 Balance Question

As an aside, I removed the pan handle because I found that it got in the way. When my 701 is adjusted all it takes is a light touch on the scope (pentax 65ED) to move it smoothy.

    New Binocular Resolution Test Results

Wow! Great test Bawko. When will you publish the target? I may be gilding the lilly here, but I cant help but wonder how subjective opinions would match up with the resolution test. But that's another project!

Can a Non-Fluorite lens binocular compete with a Fluorite lens binocular?

Absoltely! They can and do. Flourite and other ED lenses are merely able to refract light at the same angle with less chromatic aberation (CA) or refract it more with the same CA, or somewhere in between. This allows for more compact optics and/or less CA in the image, other things being...

    Which compact binoculars

Check out these http://www.eagleoptics.com/index.aspdept=1&type=19&purch=1&pid=3301 I did at a recent bird fair an reall liked them. They are on my wish list!

    Advice on lighweight Tripod Head

I really like my 701rc. It is lighter than the 128 and more compact. After using it a while I removed the handle because it was just as easy to simply nudge the scope to where I want it and have it stay there. Some folks have said they have had problems with attaching the scope, but I can't...

What are the drawbacks of using astronomical telescopes?

everybody is right! You all have good points. I was using a Celestron C 90 for a few years then my eyepiece fell out. Ouch! The C 90 is now reserved for astonomy and good weather on a deck. My Pentax 65-ED now serves me well in the field and I can use all my eyepieces (one at a time). I'd...

Depth of Field - Top end scopes

Depth of field Depth of Field is directly proportional to the focal ratio number. This is an optical characteristic that is independent of the quality (within reason) of the scope or camera. In other words, its a physics thing. As such, depth of field is a trade-off or compromise with...

    Which is easiest to use

I find that by rotating my 65mm Pentax angled scope 90 degress, I can offset the scope and use it "sideways" at eye level in a hide. My binos and scope are then easily available with a slight turn of the head without standing or crouching.

    Zeiss FL review

I wonder what the results would be if binoculars were reviewed like wines; blind. Uh, blind to the brand, of course. Wouldn't that be more........objective?
