    Memories of Buttermere

Your post has brought some memories flooding back to me. I wonder if our paths crossed all those years ago. I began to visit Buttermere as a small boy around 1961. My brother had just started work at the farm at the bottom of Honister Pass and he continued to work there as a shepherd for many...

    Hi all, remember me?

There seems to be enough old/young faces turning up here to begin a new section. Mabel used to write some interesting posts from Dublin and used to have me jealous as Glaucous Gulls always seemed to be quite common over there, not that I was ever really into gulls. Merry Christmas to all...

Wings over the Western Front:*the*First World War Diaries*of Collingwood Ingram

Must admit I'd never heard of Collingwood Ingram until I saw this book advertised on the internet. I've just had a copy delivered today from Amazon which is to be a gift for a friend of mine who is a keen naturalist and aviation geek. Having glanced through the pages I think I'm going to have...

    Hi all, remember me?

I DO NOT BELIEVE IT! You can't be 24 as that would make me...........good grief :eek!: I dropped out of Ex beebers long ago, but break my self imposed exile only to say hello to an original ex-beeber who I remember well. Nice to hear that your doing well Janay. I'll try to upload an image...

    Iceland Trip May 2015...Information Please.

Thanks Pete, Dan and Andy. Plenty to mull over. I think I do need to get the guiding sorted and work from there. I'm assuming the guiding won't be a problem if we come up with the appropriate rates, although until i look into it further I have no idea what they are. Might get back to you on...

    Hungary Trip in June

Well, I made my second visit to Farm Lator and recently returned on 21st June. Graham, Sam and I received the usual warm welcome and advice from Rob de Jong and enjoyed a butterfly tour led by Rob. No soaking this time as the weather was dry and hot...very hot, although a little cooler than...

Spurn, a day of nice folk and t*****s.

''I'm a grumpy old bat most of the time'' Oh, I wouldn't have said that your grumpy most of the time Gill!;) As for manners in hides.........Most young people in hides I've come across cause little to no problem and are there either because they are interested or because some significant adult...

Practically no RSPB reserves in North East England

As someone who lives just north of the Tyne I tend to ask myself, 'does my birdwatching suffer at all from lack of RSPB reserves in the area?' I actually think it doesn't. We have some great unspoilt areas for wildlife and to me it matters not a jot that they happen not to be managed by the...

Hungary For More - short break 10-14th Sept 2013

I don't think you would be disappointed Nick,if you get the chance to stay at Farm Lator. We didn't come across many birders there, as most most of the folk we came across seemed more interested in butterflies and other insects. We did get taken to a Ural Owl nesting site however, so I'm...

Hungary For More - short break 10-14th Sept 2013

Thanks for a very informative report. I stayed at Farm Lator in the Bukk Hills a few years ago and well remember the muddy roads. When walking on the road in the Little Hortobagy I can only describe it as like walking in inches of molten rubber. We did find some good birds there including...

    Northumbrian Birding

The road is quite good but, I don't really know how far it goes. You leave the wooded area and enter a more open area fairly quickly. I believe you can get up onto Cheviot by this route but I'm guessing you won't want to be going up there.:-) It's a fantastic area and usually very quiet...

Take a look here for some info from my visit in May of this year http://killybirder.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/harthopea-pleasant-valley-sunday.html If your prepared to cycle up past Langleeford Farm and continue for about 1 mile there were certainly a pair of Spotted Flycatcher, Common Sandpiper...

    Hungary Trip in June

Just this week confirmed our booking for 3 places in June 2014 with Farm Lator again. I'm not usually one for returning to places as there are such a wide option of areas to visit, but this booking reflects how much I enjoyed the previous stay at Farm Lator and Hungary in general. Booking with...

    Hungary Trip in June

I was surprised to see this thread active again, but thanks David we did have excellent sightings of both Penduline Tits (at the fish ponds) and Bluethroat (during guided trip on the Hortobagy. There's a trip report on the forum from 2008 somewhere. It's quite a coincidence that this thread...

    Giottos Vitruvian VGRN 8255......Advice.

Thanks for that. I'll take a closer look at them. Just realised I've posted under wrong heading. This should be under photographic tripods. Please feel free to shift it.

    Giottos Vitruvian VGRN 8255......Advice.

I'm getting back in to photography and have been looking at purchasing a tripod. I require something light, but stable. The Giottos Vitruvian seems to fit the bill. I was wondering if anyone has experience with this tripod and could comment. I have a Manfrotto tripod for my telescope and...

    Northumbrian Birding

Is it the one to the right of the path once you enter the wooded area from between the horsefields, as you walk from the visitors' centre? No. Walk past the visitor centre along the hedged pathway which has Swallow Pond to the right of it. On the left of that pathway there is an opening in...

    Info Required for August Trip

Thanks once again for the info. Cain by all accounts had a great two weeks in Switzerland. No Wallcreeper seen, but sightings did include the likes of Nutcracker, Middle Spotted Woodpecker and Crag Martin. A case of wish I'd been there.;)

Great eight hours yesterday spent on the waves with http://www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk/ I had thought that eight hours might be a bit long for me, but in the event it wasn't long enough. Perhaps a fairly quiet day as far as the birds were concerned, but very little beats being...

Pleased to hear that you had a good day Paul, and that a few waders put in an appearance at the pond and that the Roseates obliged. We may be bumping into you if you keep returning. Cheers.

    Northumbrian Birding

If you can manage another trip to St Mary's this week it's probably a good time to catch Roseate Terns. Best seen maybe two hours before the highest tide as they land on the rocks south of of the island along with Sandwich and other terns. Black Tern has also been around in recent days.

    Northumbrian Birding

Hi Mark I was with Middy24 and another birder yesterday evening and we all believed we had seen a Spotted Redshank. I continue to believe we did. I saw what I think was probably the same bird at Holywell Pond on 5th Aug and this bird has been reliably identified by numerous birders as Spotted...

Giving the Henderson petrel a fighting chance
