I looked it up and that's definitely the noise I've been hearing. Thank you so much!

    USA - Southeastern Pennsylvania

The other day I heard a call I had never heard before coming from the woods behind my house, and this was the bird making it. I only got a short glimpse and a few grainy pictures before it flew off. It was a little smaller than an American Robin, but chunky. I heard the calls again today. I...
  3. The Gang

    The Gang

Some members of an Eastern Bluebird flock. They like to perch in the tree like this and wait for me to put some food out.
  4. Friendly Junco

    Friendly Junco

    Dark-eyed Junco (male).
  5. Camouflaged Creeper

    Camouflaged Creeper

I love the little Brown Creepers. They're so tame and allow a close approach, and their foraging style is so fun to watch. The way they blend in with the tree is also amazing.

    Goldfinchs

I had to just stop feeding the Goldfinches this winter. 30+ of them would swarm the thistle feeder and empty it within a few days, and I was spending way too much money on the seed. When the thistle feeder was empty, they would take over the sunflower seed feeders and scare away other birds...

    Juncos

The Juncos have been very brazen in my yard this winter. Usually they just feed from the ground, but this year they were swarming the tray feeder, and I even saw one or two perching on a hanging thistle tube feeder, eating among the Goldfinches.

    Feeding Stations and Bird Keich

I feel your pain, Kenan. The Starlings make such a mess with their droppings. I can always tell when they've been in the birdbath because it's so dirty. The only thing I would suggest is putting out a separate ground feeder for them because they seem to prefer eating on the ground anyway. As...

    peanuts or sunflowers seeds

Peanuts seem to be most popular here. Most species will take sunflower seeds, but if peanuts are available then that is what most of them go for first.

Hard to keep up with feeding so many birds!

Do you know if there is a particular species that is eating the bulk of the food? Some larger species and those that come in flocks will just eat everything and very quickly, while the smaller/more acrobatic birds take a while to empty a feeder. You could try offering the food in feeders that...

    Whole Sunflower Hearts or Chips

I didn't even realize there was a difference, I thought hulled sunflower seeds were the same as the hearts. I guess hearts are just smaller forms of the hulled ones? I do use hulled sometimes but I always worry about it getting wet and spoiling, and also it doesn't seem like the birds are huge...

    Mockingbird Issue

Thanks for the advice. He's still hanging around and trying to get to the cornmeal mix, but I haven't seen him chase the Bluebirds as much as before, and he definitely hasn't deterred them from coming to the feeders. It seems that Starlings love the cornmeal mix, too, so now I'm dealing with a...

    Snowy Nuthatch

White-breasted Nuthatch (male). It's a little weird to see them NOT hanging upside down.

Great shot! I've also recently had a Bluebird flock in my yard, which I've never had before. Like you, I'm confused about it but really happy at the same time!

I've actually noticed that, too! I thought it was a bit too early for molting. Great shot, btw!

    Colors of Nature

Northern Cardinal (male) and Eastern Bluebird (female), taken today during a snow shower. It always overwhelms me when these two species perch near each other because they're both so stunning.

    Mockingbird Issue

I've had a Mockingbird living in my neighbor's yard for a few months now; I had seen it a few times and heard it often. I'm pretty sure it was guarding a berry tree in their yard. I had only seen it in my yard once or twice. Two days ago, a large flock (15+) of Eastern Bluebirds decided to start...

    Bluebird Again

I was so excited when a large flock of Eastern Bluebirds decided to hang out in my yard all day today and eat from my feeders (they were especially fond of the peanut butter/cornmeal mix). The last time I saw them was last month during a snow flurry, and I only saw a few, not a whole flock. Not...
