First time in Finland (work) Oulu, Tampere, Pori + Helsinki

Hi there, I'm going on a work trip next week, I won't get much time to myself and will be reliant on my legs (no car). Are there any birds in particular I can look out for in those areas or any tips regarding those areas in particular? Helsinki I was thinking I might go to the botanical garden...

    Brockholes Nature Reserve, Preston

In case you need any others on your list of "Birdy" places, some of my favourites around the Brockholes area are Burton Mere RSPB (with a visit to The Boathouse pub in Parkgate on the way to/from for lunch as it has an outstanding view of another protected RSPB marsh), Leighton Moss near...

Please help me id a bird I saw in Rome

You could well be right Delia, I am not sure either. I've been to Rome but unfortunately before I became a "proper" birder so I am not speaking from experience of seeing one there. I've seen Azure-Winged Magpie in Portugal (though upon reading up on the wiki it seems it was an "Iberian...

    Brockholes Nature Reserve, Preston

I went to Brockholes in August, I was not impressed on first sight as the carpark was £7 (for more than 3 hours, less if you didn't stay as long) and there is some kind of crappy "leisure village" (around 5 shops and a café) floating on the lake, loads of screaming children everywhere (it was a...

saw swifts here over my house in Warrington, NW England on Sunday. I thought they had gone as I hadn't seen them for about a week before that.

    British List

Wow, yes that is less than I thought and I had vaguely pondered a "yes" vote affecting my birding but didn't know how to work out - interesting, thanks!

    Refilling Feeder

If you clean your birdfeeders regularly I don't see a problem with feeding all year around. In the UK it is widely recognised that birdfeeders in gardens keep the populations of many species of small birds going, which then also helps with the larger birds like Sparrowhawks too, so I don't see...

Winner Announced; Next Drawing September 10th: Win a Pair of PRIME HD binoculars

I would be a bower bird (one of the "boring" brown ones that spend years making those fancy artistic displays) - youtube for a David Attenborough clip if you don't know what I mean as it is really something!

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

thanks for the advice, I never bought sunflower hearts before but have now got a big bag ordered as well as some new feeders and a little store to keep it all in outside. Looks like Saturday I will be doing some building and hopefully I can soon start having something to report in this thread! :D

Very busy at the bird feeder today!

My feeder has been almost completely neglected (apart from Collared Dove and Wood Pigeons) for the last month or so. I'm in NW England and not sure if it's the time of year or maybe my food isn't tasty enough. What do you recommend as food? I have nyger seed for goldfinches, mixed seed and fat...

Please tell what bird this is and why is he a brutal murderer! Argh!

Thanks for sharing the picture and the story :) I would react the same at first probably although of course all logic tells you that what others say on here is correct (and I 100% agree once I have time to think), you can't help what your first reaction is! Thanks anyway, it gave me a bit of...

    August-November England and Wales

I'm not sure if this is any use as I only properly started birding this year (I live in North West England so mainly Wales and NW Eng), these are some of the websites I use: http://www.surfbirds.com/ukbirdnews/nwindex.php And you could try the Wales section of Manchester Birding Forum...

    Hummingbird in Somerset, UK??

I know it's annoying people suggesting common birds but have you considered that it could be a starling? When the light falls on them just right they can appear blue/purplish? Maybe you can find a good photo on the net showing the iridescence of starlings and see what he thinks just to rule it out?

    Hi From NW England

I started birding when I was 8 years old (around 25 yrs ago I just realised today!). In June after being inspired by reading a book about a couple from Wales who sold everything (house, car) and quit their jobs in order to spend a year birding around the world in the hope of beating the year...

    Yearly Bird List

I am a new lister (started in June this year), although I have been interested in birds since I was 8 (25 years ago). After trying a few sites, i found Bubo.org to be the easiest to maintain, using the BoU listing. I also keep a blog (link below) with pictures to keep track. So far I am on 80...
