    Sigma 150-600 Lens Alternatives

I don't have the R7 that I have been wanting yet but with my D7 ii I found the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary to be excellent in general, but indeed it could sometimes be uncooperative with establishing a focus lock. Overall it was the weight that made me put it aside though. The EF 100-400mm ii...

    Camera advice...R7

I've been seriously looking at the Canon R7 myself as a replacement for my aging (96,250 shutter count) D7 ii. The excuse for not getting a mirrorless until now was that I was waiting for them to come out with the mirrorless D7, which the R7 is and all reviews seem to see it as a fantastic...

Focus, exposure, lighting, setting and colors, all couldn't have been better if you had been posing it! Way to go Stanley!

You just re-fired my desires to make a birding trip to Cost Rica. TFS Stanley!

Great shot Eduardo, TFS. The exact opposite of the little brown birds hiding in the foliage and fog that I was struggling to identify this morning!

Thanks from Northeast Tennessee also! Saved my posting almost identical photos taken here today. Sounds like mine were Bay-breasted

Thrush - Cove Lake SP Northeast Tennessee

Let's play name that Thrush. From Oct 2 & 3 2023 - Wooded area. Swainson's Thrush and Wood Thrush have been in this area this summer and personally verified by call as well as sightings. Recently Gray Cheeked Thrush have been reported though and I'm just not sure about these. They were not...

Least Bittern ? Cove Lake State Park, Caryville, Tennessee, USA

No offense taken, but yes it was that saturated, that's why I was puzzled. However in all fairness, I do have a blue/green color anomaly so it was probably more green than I perceive it. I have observed Green Heron often in the past and those all looked greenish/blue to me. Green Heron it is...

Least Bittern ? Cove Lake State Park, Caryville, Tennessee, USA

After some heavy rain last night I caught a brief look at a very shy fellow that I think is some sort of color morph of a Least Bittern. I got a quick visual in full sunlight as I walked up and startled us both. The overall impression was of a Bittern but with a very dark blue overall color...

    Lighter alternative to 100-400 II

I had the same issue after putting about 5 years on my 7D mkII and in the process getting 5 years older. I was using a Sigma 150-600mm Contempory, which is even heavier than the Canon 100-400mm, and I started debating whether it was a good idea to bring the camera along. I switched to a Canon...

Hummingbird - Miami County, Kansas USA

My brother sent this to me questioning whether he was correct in assuming this to be a Ruby-throated Hummingbird with some pigmentation issues. I would say almost certainly is as any other species would be a rarity for that location, however it's odd enough to warrant asking for any other...

    Tennessee - Warbler?

OK, Blue-Grey Gnatchatcher makes sense as the Merlin app has been IDing calls as BGG lately.

    Tennessee - Warbler?

From April 10 at Cove Lake State Park in Campbell County, Tennessee, USA. I'm back in the USA and birding a new area with many new species to me, not to mention being out of practice on New World birds. This fellow was mostly staying hidden while hunting insects, but I managed a couple of...

    Budget Canon lens

First of all, congratulations on the 7D, I am still using the 7D II that I bought new, back when it first came out and I have found it excellent for wildlife photography in general. Unfortunately, Canon and budget are two words that generally just don't go together. The L series are truly...

    Kingbird - North-east Tennessee

Correct, Andrew. Makes a lot more sense. Still making the shift from Old World Birds in China to an area in the US that is totally new to me!

    Kingbird - North-east Tennessee

Caught what I see as an Eastern Kingbird hawking insects at Cove Lake State Park in Campbell County Tennessee today, March 4, 2023. However since it comes back as "very rare" for this time of the year on ebird I thought I had better check on myself. Appreciate the help in advance.

EOS Rebel T7. Good lens for birding?

Welcome to the hobby of wildlife photography. You can get some good pics with that camera. That's the level of gear that I started with. Unfortunately, big glass is expensive, often more than the camera. 55mm is just going to be frustrating for you. That is a good lens for portraits, street...

Macro extension tubes for Canon with good build quality?

To be Captain Obvious - Canon sells extension tubes specifically for their own EOS lens/camera mount. Not the cheapest, but will fit up and work properly and cheaper than a lens repair. Should be available on the used market and short of outright abuse there is little to go wrong with a used one.

    Stuck on what to hire.

I'm not sure than I can contribute any useful help, as I have been wavering back and forth between the same choices myself. The biggest point holding me back from going with the Canon R is not the camera itself, but the cost of switching over to the glass to go with it. However, I hope that...

    Flycatchers - Panjin, Liaoning, China

Thanks, Grahame. Good info to keep in mind as one thing that keeps birding Panjin interesting is that in the past there was very little reporting and hence I'm constantly getting photo evidence of things that the range charts say shouldn't be here. Hence I might pickup a RBF yet someday...

    Flycatchers - Panjin, Liaoning, China

Further consideration and deeper digging on the internet and I now think you are correct, Taiga is the most probable. The gray on the face below the eye and the eye-ring was making me think R-b, but looking at more photos online and rechecking Tom Beeke's "The Birds of Dalian", I am now inclined...

    Flycatchers - Panjin, Liaoning, China

It seems that the Flycatchers are in the peak of migration right now as I caught some new similar looking ones today and would like some confirmation since new to me. First is one I first thought to be a Taiga Flycatcher, but on closer viewing seemed to look more like a Red-breasted F...

Will this lens+extender AF on this camera body?

No, I wasn't using the Extender at that time. I wasn't clear enough about that. Even without it the autofocus was finicky. Nothing like the 7Dii that I upgraded to.
