    Birding in Alicante Province

Yesterday (Friday) there were 4 Little Bitterns together for over an hour seen around the reeds and bushes on the Rio Segura 400 meters downstream from the N332 bridge. Easily seen from Calle Ingeneiro Juan Garcia alongside the river in Guardamar. A first for me, easily identified by cream...

    Flocks of Swifts

I live in Guardamar del Segura, South of Alicant, Spain. Every evening May to August we welcome the Swifts and Swallows around the apartment blocks, they feast on the insects rising from the Rio Segura which my apartment overlooks. At times there have been as many as 50 in the flock, especially...

    Birding in Alicante Province

Swallows going South Today, Monday 25th September 2017, starting at dawn there has been a steady procession of swallows flying South over the Rio Segura where the N332 crosses it. Around 08.00 there were tens of thousands in large flocks and they later thinned out (about 10.30) to about 50...

    Birding in Alicante Province

Unknown Heron. Yes I have discounted the Purple Heron, they are much more colourful. This one was distinctive because of its overall drabness. It was dark grey on its back and neck with no markings at all (no black shoulders). It was definitely a heron by size and movements. Regards, Tony

Addendum to last post; Torremolinos should have read Torrevieja. I plead late night and poor geography!

    Birding in Alicante Province

Help with identification please. Just spent an hour observing an unusual Grey Heron on the Rio Segura 400 metres downstream from the N332 bridge at Guardamar del Segura. The bird normal size for a Grey Heron but the colouration was different. The mantle and back of neck was a uniform dark slate...

    Snake ID Alicante Province Spain

It certainly looks like a Montpelier snake. The Montpelier is Spain's biggest, most of the others being less than 1 metre. In November 2015 there was a report in the local newspapers that a 3.5 metre Montpelier had been run over and killed near Los Montesinos (not far from Torremolinos), they...

    Birding in Alicante Province

Happy New Year Everyone, Today's sighting; A pair of Lesser Kestrels came about 16.30 as the sun was getting low, to sit in the tree across the road from my balcony (about 60 feet away) . The female was giving her partner "what for" for about five minutes. It took me some time to discover what...

    Birding in Alicante Province

Thanks Hotspur for your reply. I thought it was something unusual, I have a lot to learn about the resident species. Took a long walk through the woods of King Alphonso park in warm sunshine 20C. Sighting of the day; a pair of bearded tits "playing" in a small tree on the access road to "La...

    Birding in Alicante Province

Seen today near the mouth of the Rio Segura; a large Cormorant (about 2" bigger than normal) which had a completely white front. It was standing upright on a post in the river separated from the gang of Cormorants standing on the sunken white boat but behaved like them. I thought that it was too...

Sorry if this is the wrong place but I need help! I will be posting from Guardamar where I am a permanent resident. I think that with your help Mark I might be in the right place! So far I have been confused by the sheer size of the site. Where should I post any sightings? Where do I post my...

    Saw a Hoopoe!

Hoopoes I am lucky enough to live in South East Spain and during the Autumn (Fall) and Spring Hoopoes are seen frequently. They appear to be solitary birds, I have never seen a big group of them. Today whilst out walking the dog I saw four of them. They appear to avoid human contact as I always...

    Hello from Spain

Citril Finch ? Hello Mark. Thanks for your reply. As I said in my Hello intro I am a beginner with "Brown Jobs" but in UK I got very familiar with Greenfinches and what I saw wasn't one. It was more brown on the back and chest rather than having a yellow cast. I had the opportunity to study the...

    Hello from Spain

I have just found this forum and wondered if it is a good place to post my latest sightings? I live in Guardamar del Segura which is on the Costa Blanca 20K South of Alicante. My apartment overlooks the Rio Segura which is one of the three rivers in Spain that flow all year round. The mouth of...
