    North Sea Migrant

I found this clump of feathers on a North Sea oil platform (approx 116 miles NE of Aberdeen) at the weekend. I am guessing some sort of migrant wader? The length of the feathers shown is 4 inches.

    Flight shot - Fife

I got a glimpse of a flock of birds yesterday, before they dropped behind a screen of trees. There were a lot of Woodpigeon, but also a significant number of something else. Only got one shot of a couple of them, and thought Lapwing, but the wings appear to be pointed? Bottom and righthand birds...

    NZ Duck

I think I've worked this one out as being a hybrid Mallard x Grey Duck? Photo taken about a week ago on the Whakatane river, Bay of Plenty.

    Wallpaper

I have been asked to ID the bird pictured on some wallpaper. I'm guessing it is a true bird, and not an artist's flight of fancy, but it is not something I'm familiar with.

    Mergansers, Scotland

On the 19th, I saw what I took to be a Goosander on my local patch/loch. First that I have seen on the water in 5 or 6 years of birding here, but they have been reported by others on the odd occasion. Bird was at distance, and in very poor light conditions, but the white chin, and apparently...

    Misshapen Geese?

The pictured Greylag appears to be misshapen. You can't quite see it on the photo, but the distended area is only on one side of the bird. Two or three others in the flock looked to be in similar condition. One bird in the water looked to be tilted forward, as if it had exert buoyancy in the...

    Dunlin - Subspecies?

A single Dunlin on the Fife side of the Firth of Forth this morning. Any thoughts on subspecies. Gave impression of big and long billed in the field.

    Wagtail, Fife

I realise this is a rubbish photo, but the bird was gone before I could get closer or focus. Never thought anything about it at the time, but just thought it was a Grey Wagtail, as the yellow had caught my eye. Now looking at the photo (rubbish photo), I am thinking Yellow Wagtail, as I'm not...

    Firth of Forth - Ducks

Any thoughts on ID? Shots taken a couple of days ago.

    Juv Tern - Scotland

    This one has thrown me?

    Pipits, Fife

I am leaning towards Meadow Pipit for both subjects, however, the bird on the wire appears to have a very short hind claw, and the bird on the ground does have fine flank streaking. There were other definite Meadow Pipits in the area, but Tree Pipit have also been reported as passing through.

    Raptor - Scotland

I had this down as Sparrowhawk in the field, but now looking at the poor photos as bird disappeared into the distance, I have a wee niggle about the apparent pointedness of the wings. Probably just down to the photos?

    Why metal rings only?

I have terns on my local patch that obviously have metal rings. This is hugely frustrating! What is the point of using an unreadable metal ring, when you would get back so much more info if you used coloured rings/darvics? It just seems to be lost opportunities.

    Waders, Fife (Firth of Forth)

The piper pictured, I think is a juvenile Common Sandpiper. There is a bit of a shoulder gap there, but it seems a bit rotund and short tailed. Plenty of adult Sandpipers have arrived on the coast (Seafield) today, so I'm fairly sure this is just a juvenile. Second bird, I think, is a Whimbrel?

    Another Fife Wader

I'm pretty sure the subject bird is a Sanderling on the way to summer plumage, however, I never even noticed the bird to the right. I'm thinking Dunlin?

    Fife Wader

Photos taken this morning on Fife side of Firth of Forth. Very distant, so images poor, but thought it worth a go at ID. Briefly saw the bird flying away, and it seemed to have a white rump. Photo with Sandwich Tern included as size comparison. Seems to have dark/black belly in this one, but I...

    Corvid - Scotland

Rook or Raven? Leaning towards Rook, but curve on culmen and wide base of wing are niggling at me. Really did not get a clear idea of size, as view brief with no context/comparison. Possible beard showing slightly on one?

    North Sea migrant owl

A Short-eared owl was seen yesterday, but the owl pictured this afternoon seems dark, and has orangey patches on its wing that possibly suggest Long-eared? Location is approx 120 miles SE of Lerwick. Both species seen here before, but S-E O would be the default. Only one distant photo.

    Fife Wildfowl

First duck (2 photos) seen on Saturday in central, Fife. Hybrid, leucistic or a touch of domesticated duck? Group of duck out over the Forth this afternoon. I took them to be Teal with white wing bars evident, even at distance. Lost sight of them as they crossed in front of Inchkeith Island...

    Firth of Forth - Auk

I get a few Puffin on my patch every summer, but this would be the first juvenile I've ever seen? Photo taken today in horrible, murky conditions, so no better photo available.

    North Sea Migrants

Taken today offshore (117 miles NE of Aberdeen). The two passerine photos may be the same bird. The wader photos are the same bird, but I never got a better angle.

    Warblers - Fife

The first I took to be a Willow Warbler, but the head looks big and bulky. Probably just the way it is holding it. The second I think is a Chiffchaff. Projection looks short, and legs dark. Both from today.

East Neuk of Fife - Flycatcher and waders

Starting with the bird in the Elderberry, I am fairly sure this is a Pied Flycatcher, although it was wolfing berries down. With the birds amongst the Redshank, I was fairly sure on location, that I had Curlew Sandpiper, but now in front of the screen, doubts set in. There were Dunlin about...

    North Sea Gull

Seen yesterday with a large flock of Great Black-backed Gulls. Location is approx 120 miles NE of Aberdeen. I am thinking Fuscus?

    Firth of Forth Gull

This afternoon, I noticed the pictured gull. There are plenty of both Lesser and Great BBGs in the area, but this one stood out as being much darker than the local LBBGs, but still having the yellow legs. Is this just a dark LBBG?
