is this a moth or some type of hopper?

This insect is found in the east of Sierra Leone West Africa. Usually I encounter it sitting on less than 1meter from the ground but that maybe coincidence. It seems not to be too particular to specific vegetation as long as there is enough shadow and undergrowth. If this is a moth, I would like...

    Is this a tessman's flycatcher?

Saw this bird in the area near my house in Kwidadu Kono District in the east of Sierra Leone w.Africa. If this is a Tessman's Flycatcher, it is 50-100 km outside its small distribution area in the south-east of Sierra Leone. Who can confirm or come up with a different ID for this bird?

    Is this a moth?

You could be right. The shape is similar to some Cicadellidae, I could not find any pictures of leafhoppers with a fan shaped tail though. Such tails are more something for Cixiidae but then the body shape is completely different. Thanks anyway.

    Is this a moth?

This creature sat on the outside of the window of my livingroom in Kwidadu in the east of Sierra Leone (w. Africa). It is about 8mm. If it is a moth, to what family does it belong? I am well aware of the fact that only about 10% of the African insects have been described so even if you are not...

who can help ID this young bird

Found on the edge of a rice swamp in Kono district in the east of Sierra Leone w. Africa. The behaviour of the birds (4 or 5 in the same shrub) looked like fledglings to me. Beeping a lot as if waiting on feeding.

    Nkulengu Rail

Jan, I fully agree with you. I am in the possession of a Vernacular list of plants in Sierra Leone. There is not a singular tree named after the sound they make (like ratelpopulier in Dutch) yet most are named after properties like 'spoon wood' (different Apocaniceae that have soft wood that is...

    Slender billed greenbul?

On 2 March I saw this bird across the road from my house in Kwidadu in the east of Sierra Leone(w.Africa). My first guess is slender billed greenbul but I don't think it can be because there are not too many large trees anymore in the area and this one sits not more than 3m high in a bush. Swamp...

    Salagena transversa??

I saw this moth in my house in the east of Sierra Leone w.Africa two weeks ago. I guessed right away that it is a metarbelidae but as there are 7 species of which only one has got photos on the web I had to go by names. As this one has got lines across its wings, transversa could be the logic...

    Unknown birds Panama

No 3 is a (Streptopelia) dove. It has not got a black collar, that would make identification a lot easier. No 1 could be a weaver if those are found in Central America.

    Dutch duck ID

Little history on dutch ducks In the 1970s I would only see the occasional Gadwall in the Amsterdamse waterleidingduinen but anywhere else only Mallards. Now everywhere in the west of Netherland it is almost the other way around. Gadwalls have increased as have Shovelers but the mallard has...

is this a juvenile honeyguide greenbul?

On Dec 1 I saw this bird in the tree opposite my house in Kwidadu just north of Koidu in the east of Siera Leone w. Africa. The white outer tail feathers do not match the grey backed Cameroptera, though all the other colours do. Could it be a juv. honeyguide greenbul? The picture in my birdbook...

    What bug is this

Thanks for helping me in the right direction. With only about 10% of the African insects described the chance that it has not got a name yet is considerable. Reduviidae are mentioned as present in W.Africa but there is no mention of the family on the Sierra Leone checklist yet. I have now added...

thanx Thanks guys. It is a brown sunbird. We are here near the distribution boundary and I just forgot that they are here. Wonder why they call it mangrove sunbird as it is definitely not bound to mangrove The only mangrove swamps are over 200km away.;)
