    Hungary Trip in June

Thanks David. As Brian has said, we had good views of both birds. Missed Bearded Tits though. The day we were at the fish farm the train wasn't running so we could only visit the pools within walking distance, and that wasn't too far in the heat! Still a great place though and we saw lots. I'd...

    Southern African Forum

A friend and I set off for a trip to Kruger and KZN without knowing a thing about the flooding until we changed planes at Paris and noticed a short piece about it in an English newspaper. This was the Thursday (Jan 19th), so a couple of days after the worst of the flooding I believe. Our hearts...

    Serra dos Tucanos news?

Thanks Andrew. That's good news at least, although it's awful to hear about all the people who have died in the area, like the ranger, or lost their homes. Good news too about Serra dos Tucanos. I contacted Birdfinders, who I travelled with, and they've replied to say they've been in touch with...

    Serra dos Tucanos news?

Having spent a wonderful 10 days here a few years ago I've been concerned that they may have been affected by the bad flooding in the Rio de Janeiro area. Does anyone have any news? There's nothing on their website but keeping that up-to-date is unlikely to be a priority if they have been...

Gretna starling roost - how many??

Thanks Steve, that was my feeling too but nice to have it confirmed by someone who's been many times. Great video, the best I've seen of the roost. The tripod makes all the difference.

Gretna starling roost - how many??

The roost is now one of the highlights of the winter months for me. As I live in Newcastle it's quite a distance to travel so any updates on this thread are be very useful, especially which side of the motorway the birds are favouring. Thanks to those who've been doing just that. A question for...

    Northumbrian Birding

June, the goat shed is about 100 yards on the right when you turn right at the crossroads (where the big house is). There's room for a couple of cars to park very near. It sounds as if you know where Prestwick Carr itself is. Get back if you don't and I'll give you directions (as I'm sure others...

    Ex Beeb Membership Falls!!!

I know exactly where that is Brian. It's been there at least a couple of years that I know of and isn't an overnight thing. I think it's genuine folk art. Quite surreal. Councils have spent small fortunes on modern art which is no better.

    Northumbrian Birding

Thanks very much Gary. I remember you posting about them last winter but never got round to going to have a look myself. I'm determined to make the effort this time, especially as it's a short drive for me.

Gary, could you recommend a good time of evening to see the owl? Thanks.

    Return of a Wet Birder!

Blimey, you old Scrooge. I certainly wouldn't have made you Mince Pie Monitor if I'd known that was your attitude ;) My bird of the day was the very confiding female Stonechat. Their subtle but lovely colouring often gets overlooked when the more showy males are around.

A Wet Birder, First Class (Rail Too!)

In our defence, the platform screen display was showing that the next train to arrive was our Newcastle one. A Leeds train wasn't mentioned at all. It cost us over £36 each to return from Leeds sitting with the plebs rather than in the first class style at no cost which we'd been expecting...

    Dark Red Helleborines dug up

I was told recently that it's been happening at a site in Co Durham. Not sure if it was this summer or last though.

    Return of a Wet Birder!

I was at the Hartley/St Mary's Island part of your walk myself that day Brian so might have bumped into you. I also noticed a good variety of butterflies, better than any day this year really. There was a Small Copper not far from where we saw one a couple of years ago. Not a species I often...

Birding in the South of Hungary next week?

I can't help with the south of Hungary but was in the Bukk hills area in June and made two visits to the Hortobagy. We had a guide for our first visit and this was arranged for us by the owner of Farm Lator where we stayed. This was done only the day before, so pretty short notice. It was a...

    Durham Birding

It does indeed, as I found out today with the Newcastle RSPB group. We found Yellow Wagtails, a Corn Bunting, and a lot of other good stuff. The quarry after lunch was also good, with plenty of butterflies and interesting plants to see. There can't be many better areas in the north of England...
