Alaska - New Zealand non stop
Godwits Godwits Godwits I am living in Christchurch NZ..and the Godwits arrive here from the Yukon Delta, when the birds arrive here they have lost about half their body weight, and land on the estaury and can hardly stand up and actually stagger around for a bit until they feedup..I also just... -

Bats in the Belfry
Well it looks as though my Northern Hemisphere friends know more about our 'bats' than I do !!..yes there are two species .. with a third possibly extinct...and looks as though the ones we saw years ago up near Nelson may still be around there still..good for them.. Caroline -

As far as I know there is only one native bat in NZ..and it is 'native'..and will check out about hunting on the ground..but doubt it.. Busy busy blackbirds !
Well it must be around 2-3 weeks since the first lot of blackbirds hatched.. Now the female is back nesting and I presume it is the male who is educating three young ones on how to peck at the pieces of apple I have left on the lawn.. It is a most enchanting sight..they sort of line up like...- nzflutes

Kea - New Zealand's parrot
Hello Jas.. Have always loved our keas...gorgeous stroppy character birds..!! Used to see heaps up at the skifields when I was young..very inquisitive and into everything..they got a bad name for attacking sheep and lambs and the high country farmers used to shoot them! So not so many...- nzflutes

shining cuckoos invade grey warblers nest again
well once again these 'wicked birds' have arrived here in NZ..and will commence to plant their eggs in the Grey Warblers nests...having first pitched the poor Warlblers own eggs out on the ground!! the grey warbler has a hanging nest..with an entrance in the side which is actually too small for...- nzflutes

Down here....no..they breed in Alaska, Siberia..and up your way..they for some reason fly all the way down here and feed up...and then leave again in March..have been doing it for hundreds of years....I am obsessed now...when they were on their way from Alaska..flying 14.ooo kms to here non... -

Well these amazing birds arrived here in Christchurch New Zealand a week or so ago...they fly here apparently non stop from Alaska...losing around 2/3 of body weight...they totter around on the estuary for a bit, have a snooze for an hour or two..and then 'tuck' in..!! this year they rang out... -
