    I regularly visit my local lake near Los Angeles and there were lots of coots. It’s not an exaggeration to say there were more than 500. One day in late April when I visited, they were gone. I mean, gone. Poof! They just disappeared overnight. Only 6 lonely little coots remained. Where did they go?

    tufts that look like little ears

    I am confident that it is a juvenile house finch. I am watching one right now at my feeder, surrounded by a host of other house finches, and he is exactly like them except for the “ears”.

    New bird enthusiast

    I started walking around a local (man made)lake in December and became obsessed with waterfowl. That interest expanded to backyard birds, and now I support entire flocks of House Finches at my feeders. What fun!
