    Short-billed Dowitcher ?? February 29, 2004 Hawaii

The bird in the foreground is slightly smaller than its companion. The bill is slightly shorter. The posture when feeding is not as football-ish. The loral angle is greater. The tail of this bird (on the left in the flight shot) is paler. Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks.

Dowitchers - Hawaiian Islands - Winter

Photos of 3 different Dowitchers. Iʻm having an awful time telling Short-billed from Long-billed Dowitchers. I didʻt hear any of them call. Any opinions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Lesser or Greater Scaups. - Hawaiian Islands / January

Two female Scaups. Lesser or Greater. Near the end of the footage the bird in front seems somewhat smaller. Could there be both species in the footage? I have real trouble separating the two species. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    Greater Scaup ? Hawaii - February 2004

I apologize for the very bad images. Both are freeze frames from standard definition video taken many years ago. Is there enough resolution to ID the birds? The roundish heads seem about right for Greater Scaup. Thanks.

Hmmm....donʻt think so. I see only one scaup in the pond. Thanks.

    Grey-tailed Tattler? Hawai`i - Dec 21,2023

This Tattler is noticeably lighter grey and slightly smaller than the more common Wandering Tattlers I usually see here. The white eye stripes extend well beyond the eye and meet at the forehead. A close up shows a relatively short nasal groove compared to WATA. Sorry, I did not hear the call...

    Scaup - Lesser or Greater? Hawai`i - Dec 21, 2023

Side views show a somewhat rounded head as in Greater, but the frontal view looks narrow as in Lesser.

Storm Petrel ID - Hawaii - February

The tail seems too forked to be Band-rumped. Leachʻs perhaps. Any thoughts? The bird was confused by lights and came down onto the deck of a ship at night offshore of Kauai. Thanks.

    Sanderling? Hawaii - December

The bird on the far right keeping company with the Sanderlings is a little larger, darker, and the bill has a little droop to it. Another sanderling or something else? Thanks.

Dunlin or Curlew Sandpiper - October / Hawaii

Freeze frames from video. Looks a little pale and long-legged for a Dunlin. Not sure. Thanks.

Is this a dark morph Wedge-tailed Shearwater or something else? Thanks.
