    Disappearing Backyard Birds

I've noticed that I can have on and off years. Last year was an off year. Until the fall. In the summer we had very few finches, cardinals, etc., and it was so quiet, I thought I was doing something wrong. But I wasn't. Nature simply gave us a year that had lots of natural food, and the...

    Tree Swallows

Our pair of tree swallows have been doing great in keeping away preditors. Please pray that they will continue well! There are 5 eggs under all this white feather fluff, and should start hatching, any day now. I am so excited. Parents are dive bombing anyone who comes near the box, so I have...

    ***Urgent: Young Bird Found***

Well, I have to admit, I have pretty good luck with putting the bird back where you found it, and as quickly as possible. Putting it in a basket, a bowl, any kind of container and sticking it in the hedge would be a good option. The parents are probably looking for it, and often, when we think...

First year male, or female Baltimore Oriole?

And Lady, culmen is the upper half of the beak, and that was what my previous post was hinting at. Yes, the beak is definitely straight, so I guess an Orchard Oriole is out of the question. We also had 3 males at the feeder area, yesterday, so perhaps nesting is not far away. Sadly, our...

need help identifying new bird in Mass !

I was going to say an Eastern Towhee, but maybe not. Here is a picture of one.

First year male, or female Baltimore Oriole?

Well, I wish I could invite all of you over to watch the show. My husband was just finishing with mowing the lawn when he saw 3 male Baltimore Orioles chasing each other around the area where the oranges are. What a magnet these feeders are! I have two more feeders, but lack another double...

First year male, or female Baltimore Oriole?

No, seriously, it is the exact same bird, because I took the pictures in succession, only taking a few seconds to zoom in a bit before the picture where she stretched out. I was told that was the best way to take good pictures...just keep clicking and clicking in succession, and then you could...

First year male, or female Baltimore Oriole?

Oh, and if you look carefully at the two pictures, even though it is the same feeder, you can see that not only is the bird lighter, but so is the grass and the orange! Got to love digital cameras!

First year male, or female Baltimore Oriole?

Except those are the exact same birds. The sun went in and out, the feeder twirled in the wind, and when the bird stretched out to eat, she looked paler. I was also fooling around with the zoom lens, as I was using a digitial camera (Olympus 340 10x) as well as the digital zoom, and knew it can...

First year male, or female Baltimore Oriole?

No, I like things described and looked into! I just need to learn my various birding lingo. Now that I am getting pretty good at identifying my various birds, especially sparrows of many sorts, I need to learn my bird parts! LOL

First year male, or female Baltimore Oriole?

Too funny. I guess I need to teach myself a bit of the birding lingo before I translate that post! But, thank you! I will take it as a female oriole!

First year male, or female Baltimore Oriole?

Jeepers, creepers! Another "Oriole" showed up, this morning. Please tell me if you think this is a female Baltimore Oriole or a female Orchard Oriole. Thank you!

First year male, or female Baltimore Oriole?

Thank you, all! I will definitely look for that article and copy it. Birding is big around here, in MA, so I bet I will find it in my library, or one nearby. Stokes Oriole Book also has quite a lot about identifying orioles, and that was how I came to the conclusion it was a female B.Oriole...

First year male, or female Baltimore Oriole?

Are you all stumped? LOL I see people are looking at my post, but no responses! I just resent more pics to Audubon and got letters from three of their people. All three say it is a female-one admits to being in the "ozone" and identifying it incorrectly, the other day! Anyhow, I have a...

First year male, or female Baltimore Oriole?

Well, help! LOL Cornell says this is a female Baltimore Oriole, and Audubon says this is a 1st yr. male Baltimore Oriole. I also have a mature male at the oranges, and sometimes they eat together, which tells me this other one must be a female. Anyhow, I am doing the Baltimore Oriole watch...

    Swallows abandon nest-please advise!

Hurrah! The tree swallows are back and defending their territory. Bad thing is that they are chasing away a bluebird, who seems interested in Box #1. Hopefully all is well with the eggs and there will be babies! If only the sun would come out!

    Swallows abandon nest-please advise!

Thanks, Shelly. I also read, online, that tree swallows don't start incubating until the last egg is laid, and if it is cold out, the female may wait up to 2 weeks before starting, and that the eggs are okay up to that time. Does that make any sense to anyone? Anyhow, I am leaving the nest...

    Swallows abandon nest-please advise!

I live in MA and have 2 nest boxes up. We had tree swallows nest in box 2, no one in box number 1, and they had 5 eggs. We have been hit with a nor'easter, cold, rainy, very windy weather. I noticed I did not see the male tree swallow keeping guard, today, so I just went out to see what was...

Male & Female Cardinal plus more....

I agree, definitely looks like a female house sparrow to me! Nice cardinal pictures! What a fun feeder!

    Drat! It's Happened! :(

Yikes, Tammy! That is one big bear! I wouldn't dare feed with him around. Now, what does your town do about it? Do they just tolerate it, do they ever try to tranquilize the bear and move it to a far location, or are you just too far north and that is part of life in Northern Ontario?

    More Orioles!

Well, the orioles have been here all day, and I am about to go put the third orange out, so they have now gone through 4 halves! Gracious...time to go shopping for more! Check out the pics-the immature oriole saw the bug passing by and could not decide which to eat. He passed on the bug and...

They are back, this morning, keeping busy at the oranges!

How do i steal my neghbors gold finches....errr

Put a shepherd's hook and two thistle tube feeders away from the other feeders, so that the larger birds don't scare them away. Plant yellow flowers, and make sure you also have things like coneflower-let the dead heads stay for the winter, so they can eat at them. Provide water with a drip...

    More Orioles!

Junior is still with us, but a mature male oriole has just arrived, this evening, and is also at the oranges having a good dinner!

    Female Rose-breasted Grosbeak!

I had one Boreal Chickadee show up at my feeder three years ago-I believe it was in late fall. I was so excited. It was my first and only time, and my rarest sighting for this area! I love Chickadees!
