    Siskins are back

Had a pair of siskins on the niger seed feeders at the weekend, a pair of bullfinches, numerous greenfinch, chaffinch and 49 goldfinch, which I don't think is bad for a garden in a housing estate.

    a walk to buckenham marsh

We went to Buckenham in late October - loads of geese, including a bar-headed which I'm assuming was an escapee. The corvid roost in the evening was spectacular.

    Dawlish Warren Accommodation

Hoping to visit the Dawlish Warren area in November to do a spot of birding. Can anyone recommend some cheap self-catering accommodation for me and the missus as everything on the net seems a bit expensive. Cheers Gus

    Surrey Birding

Thanks very much for the information. I'd heard about the fire but didn't realise the scale of the devastation. Gus

    Surrey Birding

Hello I'll be in Surrey for a couple of days at the end of March and was intending to visit Frensham and Thursley Commons. I've not been there before. Can anyone offer any advice, tips as to the best bits, and whether I might get to see a great grey shrike or dartford warbler? Cheers Gus

    Birding alone or with others?

I almost always go birding with my wife. We've got many interests but this is the only one we really share. Apart from that she's excellent at recognising calls (I'm a bit deaf) but I've got better eyesight, so we make a good combination.

    Somerset birding

There's Burnham itself. Try Apex Park and a stretch of the riverbank by the park. It's not bad, even with the number of people on a weekend. You should get a variety of ducks, great crested and little grebes and waders on the river. You might be lucky and get the odd rarity. The last time I...

    Slimbridge hides

My wife and I went to Slimbridge one weekday when we thought it was going to be quiet. Unfortunately there was a large crowd of people on a "tour" who appeared to be competent birders, judging by the kit. We first encountered them in Holden Tower where they were looking at the geese, but there...

    Northumberland Info Please

Hi, we are intending to visit Northumberland in the late spring and would like to know if anybody can recommend the best time to visit the county. Thanks. Gus

Grossest thing you've seen a bird do

I can cope with most things but one that turned my stomach was watching a kiddy eating an ice cream on the beach. A sizeable splodge of seagull poop landed on it and the kiddy carried on licking the ice cream, finishing it off. I didn't intervene because I wanted to see what would happen...

Which birds visit your feeders the most?

At the moment we have: Goldfinch - over a hundred at times. Starlings - 150 last Sunday Greenfinch - usually 20 or so Feral pigeon - small flock of about 15 often lands in garden Then smaller numbers of: house sparrow blue tit wren woodpigeon collared dove robin sparrowhawk blackcap chiffchaff...

    Crowdy Reservoir

Thanks but I'm not going to be able to make this one. We're going to Somerset to go birding and, er, see starlings.

    Info about Blake's Pools

Info about Blake's Pools please I'm intending to go there in early December (sorting out a permit). Does anyone have any information about what are the best tides, wind conditions, etc etc. And what might turn up at that time of the year. Cheers Gus

    Crowdy Reservoir

My wife and I went to Crowdy on Saturday to do a plover count for the BTO, a week early but we couldn't do it on the recommended date. Although the target golden plover were absent we saw about 700 lapwing. Apart from that the reservoir itself was very quiet, with the "highlights" being a...

RE-INCARNATION,Which bird would you come back as ?

I'd come back as a herring gull. I'm regarded as a right pain in the a*se in this life so I might as well continue the trend! Gus

    Severn Barrage

From what I can gather, the proposal to build a ten mile long barrage, stretching from Cardiff to Weston super Mare, would have an undoubtedly disastrous effect on wildlife. It would also lead to renewed pressure to reopen quarries in the Mendips and Brecon Beacons for the estimated 100 million...

BirdTrack website - do you use it

We've been using it for some time now. Apart from the usual birding trips we also log our garden sightings and get involved in wader, warbler and plover surveys. To me it's a very laudable project and I feel like I'm contributing something positive, which is important. Gus

    Doxey Marshes

Hello again. Sometimes it's just really nice to get a break away from the rat race, even if there's nothing much to see. Gus

    Severn Barrage

Back in April (I think it was) there was renewed interest in the construction of a barrage stretching from near Cardiff to Brean Down in Somerset. I haven't heard anything for a while. Could anyone update me as to what the current situation is? Gus

    Doxey Marshes

I thought I'd nip in to have a look on the way down the M6 yesterday, maybe catch a glimpse of a jack snipe or something, although I know it's a bit early still for them. I also knew the weather was supposed to be damp so I had a quick wander through the reserve, cup of coffee in Sainsbury's...

    UK Wildlife Spectacles

Apart from the starlings in Somerset (we've booked a week near Cheddar in December) I think the gannets on Grassholm are an incredible sight. They pack one half of the tiny island with scarcely enough room to move, but the other half has none at all. What you see is a an island which is white...

    Is this Pipistrelle

Nina, it sounds like you might have a noctule or greater horseshoe if it's got a big wingspan. Saphire, yours still looks like a myotis of some sort, but there are a few different ones. Natterers and daubentons would be the most likely in your area I think. Gus

    Is this Pipistrelle

It looks to me like one of the myotis bats - maybe natterer's or daubenton's. Could do with a clearer picture to be sure. Gus

How many times have you seen a bittern?

Saw two at Blacktoft at the end of April and one at Marazion earlier in the year. One at Blacktoft was booming impressively, regular as clockwork (I just hope it wasn't a distant ship!). Gus

    Goldfinches galore!

Sunday saw the record beaten again. We easily had over a hundred in the garden this time. A sparrowhawk hurtled through without taking any but the sight of them all in the air was really impressive. It's costing a fortune in nyger seed at the moment, about £15 a week and that's buying in...
