Birds and windows do not mix.

Which - the bird hitting the window, or the guy hurling himself to the floor?

    Deceived by your eyes?

For most of last year, where I walk with my dogs in the morning, there was a plastic-bag heron in the top of a thorn tree, and also a blue-baler-twine Kingfisher on the far bank of the river. Just once there was a Red Macaw perched on a National Grid pylon, which turned out to be the remnant of...

    Long tailed tits

I've had long tail tits coming into my garden for the past 22 years and its still exciting! If you're getting goldfinches too, that's doubly so. Sure - some people get jaded and become dismissive or even contemptuous about familiar birds, but don't let them make their problem your problem.

Where to see Peregrines in Yorkshire

When Winnie the Pooh and Piglet wanted to trap a Heffalump, they decided the best place to dig a trap was just where the Heffalump was, but a few feet in front of it. I guess the best place to go to see Peregrines is just where the Peregrine is, but start looking just before it gets there. er...

    Skylarks & Buzzards

My local buzzards have been out and up early this week too. Maybe this is a seasonal display/territory/mating thing.

How do you avoid biting insects while birding?

I was troubled by midges one evening while sitting watching woodcock roding. I had run out of tobacco, so the pipe was no longer keeping them off. Suddenly - inspiration! I had some extra strong mints in my pocket. I sucked a strong mint until I had it good and wet, then I rubbed it onto my...

    Osprey Sighting in the UK

There was an Osprey close to Sutton Coldfield last Saturday morning - around 9.30am. I was driving in traffic and could not stop, so am not able to offer any further details.

    clever Robin

Funny you should mention this. I haven't seen what you describe, but I just noticed this very morning a robin hanging upside down on a feeder, in the manner of a blue tit, and was thinking how this was unusual behaviour for a robin.

    red kites

Simon - It shouldn't be long now . . . When visiting my mother in law just out of Reading (Three mile Cross) I often see them on the hills between Caversham and Crowmarsh - often only a couple of miles out of Reading. I haven't yet seen them on the south side. My brother in law lives at...

Does anyone recognise this bird dropping??

Touty - whenever I see a large bird dropping, I'll think of you.

Does anyone recognise this bird dropping??

Oh - by the way - the duck is probably not at all interested in the bird table except as a temporary perch.

Does anyone recognise this bird dropping??

Janshorty - having seen the photographs I am even more convinced that it is the doings of a duck. Every year in our local paper there is the article about the ducks that have nested in the tiny quadrangle at the hospital, from where the ducklings have no hope of reaching the outside world. That...

Does anyone recognise this bird dropping??

Yup - I'm in agreement with capercaillie on this - mallard will perch quite high on sturdy enough branches - they quite often nest in pollarded willows, several feet above ground level. It certainly looks like duck poo.

If you're really interested in birds, this will still be exciting when you've seen it a thousand times.

    Is this normal?

We had a sparrowhawk locally that developed a taste for wood pigeons. It couldn't get them up high and used to take them into a thicket and eat as much as it could take on the ground. Eventually, after a couple of weeks there was around 20 dead pigeons all in heap each with only a comparatively...

    Peak District

Dipper - just pick a river - they are everywhere in the Peak District. Just stand still or you'll likely tread on one. You might have a wander down any of the dales Dovedale, Wolfscote Dale, Monsall Dale etc. I can't just think where Wessington is, but it'll not be far. SEO - try the moors the...

    Birder Or Twitcher?

GIST - gastro intestinal stromal tumour - an extremely rare form of cancer which develops in the stroma (which is the cling-filmy sort of tissue that surrounds all the loose organs in your abdoment). It then grows into and through the surrounding organs. It is singularly unresponsive to either...

    Siskins everywhere !

beaker - I see you're in Cheshire - here in Macclesfield we've had plenty of siskins this past couple of months. My garden backs onto the Bollin and there are a couple of large alders on the bank which usually have a couple of dozen siskins flitting about them. Occasional larger flocks this...

    Birder Or Twitcher?

Simple answer: birders are interested in birds, listers are interested in lists. But don't be too hasty to judge that the difference makes one better than the other, or feel that it matters. If you look around you'll find the same contrasts in plane spotting, train spotting, etc etc. Some are...
