Confirm Juv/Imm Song Sparrow -- Albany, CA, US

Note also the white outer tail feathers. Here is a similar image of a juvenile Spotted Towhee: https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&id=055759DA5E45242F5EACA67A873CA88000FE8B65&thid=OIP.5Gd8oCt58y9kkyiYFkw1OAHaFI&exph=443&expw=640&q=spotted+towhee+juvenile&selectedindex=19&vt=0&eim=0,1

Confirm Juv/Imm Song Sparrow -- Albany, CA, US

If you look at the scapular region, you can see the spots developing that would indicate juvenile Spotted Towhee. A Song Sparrow would not have those spots.

Confirm Juv/Imm Song Sparrow -- Albany, CA, US

Looks better for a juvenile Spotted Towhee to me.

    Lazuli Bunting?

Indigo Buntings do occur around Mono Lake in the summer. You can find that with a species search in eBird. Here is the entry regarding breeding range from BNA: In California generally scarce, most regular at South Fork Kern River Valley, Mono Lake, Monterey Co. and San Diego (Beedy and Granholm...

Bird from Madera Canyon in SE Arizona

Females and juveniles are duller and grayer below, and all reportedly have rusty undertail coverts in definitive basic plumage.

The gray-blue gular pouch would support a leucistic Brandt's Cormorant.

    Woodpecker drumming Ontario canada

In order to see the spectrogram from your recording you would have to open the recording with appropriate software, such as Audacity, a free software program for both PCs and Macs. Good sources for comparison spectrograms and recordings are xeno-canto.org and macaulaylibrary.org.

    Woodpecker drumming Ontario canada

Looking at the spectrogram, the drumming is about 20 beats per second, which is too slow for Hairy and a bit too fast for Pileated. The best options based on the beat frequency would be Black-backed, American Three-toed, or Northern Flicker. I'm not sure whether range would help you sort those out.

Sounds like American Robin calls at the beginning and cheerio song at the end.

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, MA bird identification help

Why isn't number one a Red-throated Loon? The thin upturned bill and white lores look better for Red-throated to me.

    Mew Gulls?

Location and date? 1 and 2 look good for Mew Gull, but 3 and 5 look better for Glaucous-winged. 4 doesn't look like a Mew Gull to me. It could be a California Gull, but I wouldn't draw any conclusions about 3-5 without knowing location and date.

Night Bird Sound? - Massachusetts USA

Those are Great Horned Owls. You'll find many similar recordings on the Macaualay Library website and on Xeno-Canto.org

Is this a Velociraptor or a Bird Call?

It's difficult to hear much in the video, but a juvenile Great Horned Owl sould be a possibility. Here is a similar call from one: http://www.xeno-canto.org/330650

    Seabirds-- SoCal

The first two look good for Scripps's Murrelet (all dark above, white underwing, pair flying away). They started arriving a week or so ago.

Brewster's Brown Boobies in middle of Pacific Ocean

Birds of North America Online indicates that they range hundreds to thousands of miles from colonies, and do not need to return to land to roost. We also have to keep in mind that this is an El NiƱo year, so birds could be dispersing more widely in search of food.

    Second bird from Irvine CA

This is what Birds of North America Online has to say: "Blue-gray is told from both California and Black-tailed Gnatcatchers by its extensively white outer tail feathers, quite unlike the blacker tail pattern of these other two species." For California Gnatcatcher it says: "Rectrix 5 mainly...

Those all white outer tail feathers look better for Blue-gray Gnatcatcher to me.

Unknown bird song - Southern California

I would say most likely Lesser Goldfinch. I wouldn't want to completely rule out American Goldfinch without listening on headphones and looking at a spectrogram, but I think I hear some of the plaintive notes of Lesser Goldfinch and less of the repetition you might expect with American. Both...

Orinda, CA - more October-November mixed

Not in California Lou! If you consider the diversity of responses so far, I think it is safe to say that these birds are unidentifiable from this photo.

    Window strikes in southeast PA

Yes, reflections are a major cause of bird window collisions. The American Bird Conservancy website has some good information on preventing bird window collisions (http://abcbirds.org/threat/bird-strikes/).

    Alcid - Offshore, Ventura, California

I meant to say juvenile or molting adult. I just saw hundreds off Monterey that looked just like this one. They are not cleanly marked at this stage. I'm not saying it couldn't be a MAMU, but I think overall a Common Murre is a better fit.
  24. P

    Alcid - Offshore, Ventura, California

I think a juvenile Common Murre would be a better fit. They are abundant in this area, while Marbled Murrelets are rare south of Point Conception.

    Eastern USA, Northern Rough-Winged Swallow?

I don't see any smudging on the under tail coverts. Why not Eastern Phoebe for this one? [looks like Andy's post was in transit when I was writing mine...]
