Hi all, been checking a few photos of Pyramidal Orchids I took a couple of years ago at a site in NE Leicestershire. Please see attached and I'm just wondering if this is a Var.emarginata type? It would probably be a first for the county! Cheers, Dave.

Hi Joanna, have you checked with the British Geologial survey place near Nottingham? As I think you can get maps of different counties to show what the soil types are for the region you are asking about? Hope this helps? Cheers, Dave.

Wasp Orchid in Leicestershire/Rutland! Hi all, I photographed this Bee Orchid on Saturday at a site in Rutland. Personally I think it's a "Wasp Orchid" (Bee Orchid Var. trollii) but would like to know what other people think of the orchid? I look forward to your replies, Cheers, Dave.

    2013 UK orchids

Hi all, just to let you know, I had 70+ Violet Helleborines at Great Merrible Wood LRWT yesterday. The majority of spikes were just starting to flower. So if anybody is going to the nearby Birdfair next weekend the plants should be just right for photos. If you would directions for the VH's can...

    Leicestershire and Rutland Birding/Local Patches

Hi Adam, you could try Cossington Meadows LRWT as well, which is just down the road from Mountsorrel. The local birders call this whole area the Soar Valley. It has some decent habitat from Cossington Meadows right down to Birstall Meadows which is on the outskirts of Leicester. Have you checked...

    Leicestershire and Rutland Birding/Local Patches

Try Cloud Wood for WL Hairstreaks. I had few last weekend whilst looking for orchids. The best place for them is near the metal gate entrance on the north side of the wood. Also look out for Silver washed Fritillary, as one has been reported in this area! For Purple Hairstreaks try Swithland...

    Cetaceans in North East England

Had at least 15+ White beaked Dolphins off Whitburn this morning from 11.20am to 12.00pm. The group moved slowly north towards Tynemouth and there appeared to be feeding as the group changed directions on a number of times. If this is any help John, I viewed from the coast path, below the...

    2013 UK orchids

Thanks Steve, I 've a got a theory that a lot of these difficult Helleborines is due to the geology of the site. It's interesting to note that Alyn Waters sounds like Messingham were it has inland Dune Helleborines. Cheers, Dave.

Hybrids maybe Sean? What's the soil like at this place and has it been imported to this site? But I agree with your comments, the first two look like GFH, the third Dune and last one BLH! Cheers, Dave.

    2013 UK orchids

Hi James, as Sean said your far too early! The VH's at Great Merrible will probably in flower around the time for the Birdfair. I would bother with Prior's Coppice as I don't think VH's occur there and were mis ID a few years ago! If you need any more info on the VH's let us know? Hope this...
