Hi Mark, Totally agree re doing one's own thing in Israel, It's like having all the UK hot spots compressed into one small area which you share with about five other people. Yes, the north is well worth it - if only we'd more time . . . . cheers, Dominic

Wow - thanks to everyone for all the info. I missed the last few posts as I was up to my eyes in fantastic Israeli birding. Caught up with AW at Shefaz - took a long time for a very fleeting (but diagnostic) view so no photo :-( It was a fantastic 10 days - I've blogged it on...

Lucky you, jimmyjames, lucky you! How was the kittlitz's plover? :-) Maybe see you on the road? We're on for a week in Eilat and the south and then either another week in the south or head north. Depends on where the birds are . . .

I'll do my best to get some pics and will certainly let you know where I post them. I also have a very underused blog (http://dominicsfieldpics.blogspot.com/) that I want to add to. One of these days I'll put some local birds on to it. D

No problem. Compared to a decent pic of an AW I think the scenery will be easy! :-)

Hi, I'm going to be in Eilat-Arava area for a few days in early April. Apart from all the migratory goodies I really want to catch up with Arabian warbler. I had one all the way up at Neve Zohar (extreme North for AW) a couple of years back but would really like to see one again. Any ideas...

    What's this shrike?

Thanks for all the comments. Very useful indeed. It's not an easy one is it? The difficulty in getting good pics was that it either stayed quite deep in the shrub or flew quickly to c. 100 m away (before returning equally quickly to the shrub).

    What's this shrike?

Thanks Ian, Jason, I appreciate your input. I thought was too late in the year for LG in Israel (could be wrong) and it had too much of a wing patch - check out the steppe grey on http://www.hawar-islands.com/blog/14_stub.php/2007/01/ This is a real stumper for me. . . .

    What's this shrike?

Hi, I found this shrike in Israel (21st October, 2007). I put it down to Steppe Grey Shrike (L. pallidirostris) but there's some controversy over id. Unfortunately I didn't manage to get any shots of its back or wings (large white wing patch) or note any details of primary projection. Next time...

    Washington DC info

Hi Brad, I'll take your advice on MDOsprey. Thanks. As luck would have it we were planning a few days with the family somewhere on the Shenandoah! Breeding Cerulean would be a significant factor in choosing exactly where. . . . once again, thanks! Dominic

    Washington DC info

Hi Brad, Excellent information. I'll try and get there too. Am I right in thinking that there will still be a few juveniles there in mid-August? My other top warblers are Blackburnian and Cerulean. Any info on those? best wishes, Dominic

    Washington DC info

Hi Chris, You should have a look at the local blogs for the info you want. John's blog http://dendroica.blogspot.com/ is excellent - a fantastic source of local knowledge. The Maryland Orthi Soc is useful too. http://www.mdbirds.org/sitemap.html I was in Washington for a few days last...

    black necked grebe?

Hi Ralph, IanF and John J, Many thanks for your replies - very helpful. Unfortunately work ties me up during daylight hours but come Saturday I'll go and have another search for it (sans kids) in light of your advice. You're right about Slav grebes but I thought bn was more likely because of...

    black necked grebe?

Hi everyone, Can anyone help with this id? Yesterday while walking with my kids round the lake at Haddo House (Aberdeenshire) I saw a strange grebe(?). It was slightly larger than a little grebe (a pair were also on the lake for convenience), had a dark back, head and neck but a white chest. It...
