    Birdweather recording device

Hi, has anyone got any hands on experience with the birdweather recording device? BirdWeather - a living library of bird vocalizations. I've previously used a voice recorder, then an audiomoth and then a parabolic dish for nocmig recording (with the dish being best by far). I've given up on...

Large Gull ID, UK - 23/02

Had wondered about YL Gull in the field but reviewing the pics I wonder if it is just a Herring Gull. Thoughts/comments welcome.

    Yellow-legged Gull 2W, UK, 28 Sep 23

Had this down as a 2W Yellow-legged Gull. UK, 28 Sep 23. Confirmation would be appreciated.

    OM-1 with Panasonic Leica 100-400

Apologies for opening a new thread on this but going round in circles. I'm looking to replace my current set up (7d Mark ii, Canon 100-400 ii) as it's getting a bit heavy for me. I'm mostly a birder but like taking pics. I mostly use the camera for gulling at the moment but also do a lot of...

    Acro - 19Aug23, UK

Had this down as Reed Warbler in the field but does look quite bright. Still leaning towards Reed but some input would be most appreciated.

Black Kite - ageing (UK today)

Struggling to age this bird. Very worn tail and outer primaries. Some pale marks on the primaries on the upperwing. Tail slightly lighter than body. 3cy is best guess. Any thoughts?

    Split of bird identification forum?

I know this has been discussed before but I think it's time to revisit. I personally feel it would be beneficial to split the ID forum according to geographical regions (e.g. for Western paleartic etc) and with the increase of audio id requests have a separate thread for these also. It would...

    Lighter alternative to 100-400 II

I've replaced the Canon 100-400 l with the Canon 100-400 ll. At the same time I've replaced the body from a 80d to a 7d. I really liked the versatility and weight of the older model. I like the faster focus on the newer model. After a year and a half I'm finding the 'new' set starting to feel a...

Large Gull ID required, UK, 03Jan23

2nd or 3rd cycle gull observed yesterday. Strong contrast between white underparts and darker than 'normal' coverts. Can't decide if it's a Herring Gull or Yellow-legged Gull. If YLG would expect more replaced coverts but variability is huge and could be bit retarded. No other pictures and not...

Ebird app change to list display

I've noticed that when I use the app and search for my records of e.g. Pallas's Warbler, I get the list with location only, rather than location and date. This was always an easy way to find historical information and without the date this is pretty useless for me. On the website the...

Caspian Gulls, UK South Coast 24Sep

Three different birds all of which I have down as Caspian Gulls. The close one I'm sure of, the other two were a lot more distant but hopefully still show enough to allow ID. Comments would be most welcome.t welcome.

2cy Yellow-legged Gull ? UK, South coast today

Large 2cy gull - I think it's a YL but would be good to get confirmation. Any comments welcome.

2CY Gulls, UK South coast (last few days)

Three 2cy large gulls. Trying to learn about this age group. Herring Gull is default Gull here but we've had a huge push of LBBGs, regular YLG (juv/1st winter) and the odd Caspian Gull. Most Herring Gulls this age don't have any significant amount of grey mantle feathers yet but of course huge...

    Large gull UK, 24/07

Had this down as a juvenile YLG in the field today. Looked ok to me both on the deck and in flight. On reviewing the pictures I noticed the tail feathers had some white marks in the tail band, something I hadn't seen before. Pictures taken in strong sun-light, hence the flight pics came out a...

Dry bag for Lowepor Flipside 300 AW ii

I'll be taking part in a few boat excursions soon with lots of spray expected. Can anyone recommend a dry bag that fits my Lowepro Flipside 300 AW ii? I don't think the supplied cover is enough and doesn't cover the back in any case.

    Large gulls - UK, 22Apr22

Got Caspian vibes from both of these birds. First one a very worn 1W (2cy) bird, which admittedly looked better in the flesh than in the photo. Bit short-legged looking Second one a 3W (4cy) bird. Unfortunately viewing conditions were challenging late afternoon, the birds were highly mobile and...

Herring Gull with all dark eye

I came across a presumed 4cy Herring Gull with an all dark eye today. This is a known occurrence and in the Olsen book it gives a frequency of <1 in 5000 in a scandinavian sample area. Does anyone have some more/additional/newer data on this?

    Herring Gull ageing, UK (today)

Presumably a 3rd winter, 4cy Herring Gull. Looked a bit odd with already white tail but rest of plumage (including bill) not as advanced. Similar bird here: Gull Research Organisation

    Large Gull - UK, 28 Dec 21

On first glance I thought it would be a Caspian Gull, based on prominent white head, collar, white rump and nice defined tail band. However it's got a dark underwing (thus ruling out the former), a poorly defined primary window and a dark smudge around the eye. That makes me think it may be a...

    Yellow-legged Gull, UK 18 Dec 21

My initial thought was: Nice, adult Yellow-legged Gull. Yellow legs, dark grey back, nice clean head, dark red orbital ring. Bigger/bulkier than most of the Herring Gulls present, with a darker mantle. It's also got a dark band on P5. It was only when I looked at the photos that I noticed the...

Large 1st winter gull, UK, 05 Dec 2021

Bird seen today with many Herring Gulls. Very big, to the point where I initially thought GBB Gull when it flew in. Features: Almost all white head Strong dark bill with paler base Some neck streaking but not overly pronounced Replaced coverts (more in the right wing), in addition to mantle...

    Yellow-legged Gull question. UK, 30 Sep 21

I had this down as a 1st winter YL Gull based on structure, bill, tail pattern, moult of scaps and lesser coverts, dark underwing, greater coverts pattern. Depending on wing position, the primary window seems more pronounced than I'd expect for a typical YL Gull. Any thoughts? I don't see too...

    Yellow-legged Gull ? UK, 18-Sep-21

I think this is a YL Gull but have been caught out recently by LBBG, so would be good to confirm. Unfortunately wouldn't allow me to get close, hence pics are heavily cropped. At distance contrasting whitish head/body with darker back (hence stood out from the crowd) Whitish head with...

    Juvenile Gull, UK, 14-09-21

Would appreciate thoughts on this gull. Stood out based on white (but still well marked rump) and clean black tail band. Photos are slightly dark, as they were taken just before sunset. The bird has some odd brownish colouration going from the back onto the rump. Primary window relatively week...

Gull ID, UK 18 Aug 21

Not sure on this one as mixed features to me. Wide tail band but broken in outermost tail feathers. Rump white but still well marked. Overall dark wings with only very faint primary window. Size as Herring Gull. Bill chunky and all black. Herring Gull doesn't fit, no pronounced primary window...
