1st winter Smew? Central Sweden 24th October

I thought this duck looked interesting so I took a couple of pictures. . It looked a bit like a Goosander but was much smaller. After looking in the guide I think a first winter Smew is a good match. Am I correct? It was at the local boat club and I saw Smew there in January. Adult males are...

    Harrier Central Sweden 11th October

We saw this bird being attacked by our resident female Sparrowhawk yesterday. The action was fairly close to the window but the angle wasn't the best for ID. Obviously the bird was much larger than the Sparrowhawk but it may have looked larger than it was because it was close. The most likely...

Rough-legged Buzzard central Sweden 7th October?

I'm fairly sure that this is a Rough-legged Buzzard but I like to see the white inner tail above to be sure and I didn't today. I think it's probably a juvenile because of the buff in the wings. Am I correct?

    Finch central Sweden 17th September

It was in the birch tree outside the garden this morning. I took quite a few pictures but I'm still not sure what it is. Best guess is a young Linnet. I have a feeling I'll feel a fool when it's been identified. :)

    Warbler central Sweden 16th August

Is this a Garden Warbler? It lacks the blue-grey patch on the neck but it might be a young bird. I can't think of anything else it could be but I may well be wrong.

    Butterfly central Sweden 30th July

At first I thought it was a Red Admiral but there's a white edge to the wings and too little orange. Then I thought Poplar Admiral but it seemed too small and the white edge doesn't fit.

Tree Pipit or Meadow Pipit, 28/7 central Sweden?

I think this is a Tree Pipit based on the short-looking hind claws and the warm-coloured flanks but the flank streaking looks fairly pronounced. Am I correct?

Warbler? Thrush Nightingale? Central Sweden 20/7

I saw a Lesser Whitethroat just after photographing this bird but this is something else. At first I thought warbler but I wonder if it could be a juvenile Thrush Nightingale.

Goose, south of Stockholm 14 April

Don't know if it's even possible to identify this goose from these poor pictures. Any ideas? I thought Bean Goose but it doesn't seem to fit.

Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers - males or juveniles (Stockholm)

Every spring for 3 years we have had a female Lesser Spotted Woodpecker on our feeders. This year she arrived on 26th February. On 18th April I visited the little cemetery across the road to see if I could find the woodpecker as I had seen previously seen her in the cemetery or in the trees...

    Skanör, South Sweden 24th April

This is the closest I've been to a wild raptor. I was photographing Avocets when this bird suddenly appeared. It flew round me and then landed in some reeds/long grass surrounding a small pond. Then it flew across the road and circled around my wife before landing and then flying off. It seemed...

Female Sparrowhawk or male Goshawk, Stockholm 21 December

Recently, in the immediate vicinity, we've had a male Goshawk flying overhead, a male Sparrowhawk that took a Great Tit behind the feeders and a female Goshawk amidst a flock of Fieldfares. All these birds were easily identified but this one, seen earlier today, was a long way off at the top of...

Old picture grouse species Stockholm 18/10 2009

I was looking through old pictures and stumbled across this. I probably knew what it was at the time but now I'm not at all sure. Maybe a Capercaillie but the wing patterns look wrong. I'd be grateful for any input.

    Pipit West Sweden 25 September

At the time I was sure that all the pipits I saw on the island of Hållö on the west coast of Sweden were Rock Pipits but when the 4th picture as posted on a website it was described as a Meadow Pipit. I don't want to get in touch with the website editor until I am sure of my facts. Bird 4 may...

Plovers - central Sweden 27 September

I thought these were juvenile Grey Plovers at the time and I still think so now but the buff-brown plumage has introduced a shadow of a doubt. Those beaks are surely too powerful for Golden Plovers though?

    Raptor Hälsingland Sweden 2 September

The only thing I can come up with is a female Hen Harrier but I'm not sure I'm right.

    South Sweden early April

There were 3 birds that I was unsure of during our trip to Skåne in the far south of Sweden from 4th-9th April. There was also 1 other bird that I was able to identify quite easily but that I think may be of interest. I also a little uncertain of the correct terminology. 1. Some kind of duck...

    Skåne, southern Sweden july mix

We were on holiday in the far south of Sweden from the 9th to the 24th July. We saw a lot of species and were able to identify most of them but inevitably there were some we just couldn't decide upon. Some of these should be easy and some by be too far off or too poor quality to identify with...

Which raptor - Stockholm region 20/6

I think I know what this bird is but I'd rather not say just now. The problem is that what I thought I was photographing turned out to be something else entirely. Taken in very bright sunshine. I had a look at the prey in several photographs and iI see webbed feet so I'm assuming it's a duckling...

    Sweden 18/5: 1 warbler or 2?

On the way down to the reed beds att Lake Tåkern in central Sweden I took some pictures of a warbler singing in a tree near a small pond. At the time I thought it was a Sedge warbler but when I downloaded the pictures I saw a Reed warbler with an unusual eye streak. On the way back from the lake...

    Pipit Stockholm area 26/4

I'm not great on pipits. This one was very far off and the pictures aren't at all sharp. My guess is Tree pipit. It struck me as being yellowish brown in colour. Most of the pipits I see are Meadow pipits but the colour and the eye-stripe looked wrong in this case.

Eagle and geese central Sweden 11/4

We were at Hjälstaviken yesterday and saw an awful lot of geese, mostly Greylag and Barnacle geese with a few Canada geese. These are clearly another species and I'm fairly certain they are Bean geese. The default eagle in my part of Sweden is the White-tailed eagle and I saw one yesterday...

    Grebe, Scotland 3 November

The last grebe I posted from Helensburgh turned out to be a Slavonian but this one looks much more like a little grebe to me. Am I right this time?

    Grebe, Helensburgh Scotland 2/11

I think this is a Red-necked Grebe but I'm not 100% sure. There are other pictures but they're all taken from a distance. Threre wwere 2.

    1 wader 1 raptor, Sweden

I'm guessing the raptor is a young Peregrine and the wader is a Woodcock. Am I correct?
