    Thank you lou and THE_FERN. On the day there was a flock of about 30 of them. A watcher tried hard to convince me they were grey plovers, but that didn't sit well with me. Thank you too Dawsy, Butty and Rich.

    My Collins shows the first winter birds having a pink lower mandible, and the supercilium being white in front of the eye and buff behind it. This grey wagtail doesn't have either of those traits. I'm thinking your scenario is very likely. Thank you foresttwitcher for spending some time on this.

    Thanks for the further response Nutcracker. I guess I'm just going to have to get a clear shot of the ring. To me the right hand bird has a deep red bill, and left hand bird a lighter orange bill. It would be interesting to know how other people see these colours.
