Help with coastal birds winter plumage, UK.

I would be grateful for any opinions as to which species this wader is. Also could anyone tell me if this long-tailed duck is an adult female or a juvenile. Both pics taken from Lindisfarne causeway in November. Thank you.

Help with seabird plumage - UK.

I would be grateful for any opinions on which species of seagull is shown with the eider. It was taken in November in a harbour in South East Scotland. Adult herring gulls are the most common gull in the harbour, but great and lesser black-backed gulls also occur. Please can anyone tell me if...

Help with plumage please - UK.

I would be grateful for any opinions on these black-tailed godwits regarding plumage: adult/juvenile, male/female, breeding/non-breeding. Photo taken on a salt marsh in South East Scotland 15.10.21. Similarly for the grey wagtail, taken at a freshwater pool in the Scottish Borders...

    A normal Jackdaw UK?

These 2 pics show a Jackdaw darker than I am familiar with. They are probably the same bird, taken within 4 minutes of each other at Musselburgh 23/10/16. Please can I have opinions as to whether it is just a normal jackdaw - Corvus monedula, or is it the darker variety - Corvus monedula...

    Help sexing a UK Wheatear

Please can I have opinions as to whether this is a male or female wheatear. I believe the males do turn a browner colour in late summer. This was taken on the walls of Dunbar Castle 19/9/08. Thanks a lot

Help in sexing a UK wagtail.

Please can anyone help me sex these grey wagtails. It would also be very useful to know if their plumage is that of a mature or immature bird. They were all taken on a freshwater stream just before it ran into the sea in South East Scotland. Number 1 (extreme left) taken 20.4.19, 2 taken 2.8.19...

    Sexing mute swans

These birds often changed over incubation duties about 11am, which is what they are doing here. The one sitting on the nest (7 eggs) vacated it and the other one took over. The one shown sitting had a silver ring beginning with ZZ, perhaps ZZ2839 (numbers are guesswork) on its left leg, the...

    Guillemot plumage query, UK.

I took this pic in early June on the Farne Islands. I would be grateful for any opinions as to whether this is an adult bird which has failed to moult into its summer plumage, or whether it is a juvenile. The other guillemot chicks on the island were nowhere near the size of their parents...

    UK grebe

Can anyone help me with this one please. The obvious candidate for me is red-necked grebe but the head plumage, neither juvenile nor adult seems to match with my Collins guide. I took it on a freshwater lake in the Knapdale forest a week ago. It seemed to spend most of it's time underwater.

Pale or dark bellied brent geese, help to distinguish please. UK.

I took these pics at Lindisfarne NNR in November. I read that most brent geese here are pale-bellied, but small groups of dark-bellied are also present. I would appreciate any opinions as to whether all these pics depict pale-bellied, or which if any show dark bellied. Thanks a lot

    Duckling colour variation - UK

This duckling was being shunned by other ducks and ducklings on a canal in West Yorkshire. The only birds on the water at the time were mallards. I would be grateful if anyone can tell me the name of it's condition, and offer any opinions as to the species. Thanks a lot

With these black-headed & common gulls roosting on a frozen reservoir is a larger immature gull. I would appreciate any opinions as to whether this is a lesser black-backed or herring gull, or otherwise. Thanks a lot

Willow or Marsh Tit - Hungary

These pics were taken in January at the same location in the same session. The location was a wooded area in Bukki National Park, Hungary. They may be the same bird. I read in Collins that marsh tits come to feeders in winter, but not willow tits. That suggests Tit 1 is a marsh, but it also...

Tern chick ID help please, UK.

I would be grateful for any opinions as to whether this is an arctic or common tern chick. Does anyone know if there are any differences at this age or are they more or less the same? I've viewed lots of pics, they seem to start off brown and then turn this blue/grey colour. Taken late June on...

Caterpillar on Lindisfarne ID help please

This beast was very prominent on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne last month. By memory the biggest were 60mm or more. I've been wading through websites and photo lists but not found a good fit yet. The nearest is Garden Tiger but the photos I've seen of that don't have the orange saddle. If...

    Conifer ID help please.

Would anyone be kind enough to give me an opinion as to what type of tree this is. A common name and latin name would be very helpful if possible. I'm afraid my knowledge of trees extends only to it's probably some kind of fir or cedar tree. It's growing in a garden in West Yokshire, about 375...

Gull ID help please (USA IN UK?).

I took these near Dunbar on the east coast of Scotland in November. Can anyone give me an opinion as to whether it's a ring-billed gull. It's on the wrong coast. I don't want to give myself a new tick if it's only a common gull.

    A balmy day at Blacktoft

Yesterday I just fancied sitting in a hide and watching the world go by. I was hoping the world would include Marsh Harriers flying close enough to get good pics. They didn't of course, but I spent a pleasant hour and a half waiting for them. I had a quick look at the other hides and took a few...
