    Roseate Terns at Amble?

With a very good scope you can pick them out on Coquet Island from the dunes off Links Road Hauxley. You are better off going on the boat trip though, booking essential. Roger

Best chance to see Cirl Bunting in Devon

I think you mean Powderham Marsh RSPB at Exminster not Exmouth. Park behind the Swan's Nest Hotel and follow the footpath which zig zags up to the viweing platform. The feeders are along the bottom hedge. It's about a 10 minute walk. Roger

    Birding advice for North Uist.

I have just got back from North Uist. You don't have to look for Short Eared Owls just keep a lookout when driving around. Most sandy beaches are thronged with waders at the moment. Balranald RSPB around the white hut visitor centre is best for Corncrake. Aird an Runair out past the camp site at...

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

Before we started going to the Outer Hebrides we used to go to Skye and then Mull. Always crossed from Lochaline and stayed at Strontian a couple of times .Now the Lochboisdale ferry goes to Mallaig and not Oban will no doubt visit again. Regards Roger

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

Two other Birders and I spent several hours at Strontian on May 19 and we didn't even find any Mallards let alone the Black Duck. We searched everywhere including several times where a local told us he had seen it early morning. The lady from the house across the bridge from the church told us...

    Ptarmigan in Cairngorms

A friend of mine went up the train this morning and saw a pair of Ptarmigan so close to the viewing area he had to lean over the wall to see them.

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

Thanks for all your advice. Hope it stays a few weeks longer until I come back from North Uist. A Birder I know we ll told me he was fairly sure he saw a Hawfinch yesterday near the gliding club at Feshiebridge. I didn't know they were this far north. Anyone know if they are. Regards Roger

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

Hope this is the right thread for advice on where to look for the Black Duck at Strontian. We return from the Uists on 19 May and the ferry now docks at Mallaig. We thought about a detour to Strontian to look for the Black Duck. Any advice as to the best places to look for it would be very...

    Somerset Birding

This morning there were 2 Glossy Ibis very close to Tor Hide at Ham Walls RSPB. I was told that it has now been confirmed that there are 3 birds present. Went in to Avalon Hide and within a few minutes good views of Bittern and Water Rail were had. Two Marsh Harriers flew by the hide giving all...

    Somerset Birding

Not a place I go very often but I usually drive as close to the beach at Uphill as I can and then walk left across the beach to the river. Roger

    Somerset Birding

Got to Stolford yesterday just in time to see to see the 37 Pale-bellied and 2 Dark-bellied Brent Geese fly off around Hinkley Point (Not my count). I passed 2 male Wheatears on my walk and I was just counting the Common Scoter flock when a Police land Rover stopped behind me, I had got to 40...

    Somerset Birding

There is obviously a reason why the thread died a death. I tried for a while to keep it going without success. The SOS Message Board is very active although many of the top Somerset Birders no longer use it preferring twitter instead now. Anyway, best of luck. Regards Roger

    Tips for Scottish Specialties

When I was there in early May someone had hung a fat ball in the left corner of the Osprey Centre car park and Crested Tits were feeding on it. I presume the fat ball was hung by photographers. Roger

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

I haven't been for several years but I was always surprised at how many cars were in the car park when I used to arrive about 5.15. My advice would be to get there as early as you can but it is a long drive from Sky. I leave Aviemore on the 6 May to drive to Sky and it is not a fast road. Best...

    Somerset Birding

Went first to Stolford this morning and as soon as I went through the gate I saw the Snow Bunting feeding along the concrete track. Shortly after wards it was joined by a Black Redstart. After lunch I decided to go to Steart and as I was driving through Stockland I noticed a small flock of...

    Somerset Birding

Great find by ChrisG yesterday of a juvenile Surf Scoter off Blue Anchor at high tide and then more distantly off Dunster Beach later in day. Still present this morning over the high tide at Blue Anchor and fairly close to the shore. This is the first record for Somerset. Also on the sea were...

    Scilly Trip

Getting the community bus time table from either the bus driver or the town hall is handy at times. It runs fairly regularly and can get you from one end of the island to the other quite quickly. Roger

    Cornwall Birding

Best to park at Ryans Field RSPB and then walk past the hide down to the estuary. Go through the gate and cross the dual carriageway. Look over the wall and you will be standing on the "road bridge". Roger
