    found in a local shop

I found this painting in a local shop and could not resist it. Sharing it here on the off chance that someone recognises it as I would be interest to work out who painted it.

gulls - Norfolk UK, Oct 2023

Spent some time at the beach yesterday amongst others I grabbed a couple of shots of this gull. Just cannot make it click in my brain so if someone could put me out of my misery that would be good. Third shot is (obviously) a different bird - helps on the ageing of it would be appreciated. Also...

    possible return to digiscoping...

Many years back I did some digiscoping and went through a few of the classic cameras. After a few years I ended up adding a DSLR, then a long lens and since then it has basically been standard photography all the way for me. However these days I find that the pursuit of a good photo can get in...

    More therapy than art

Many years ago I used to draw a lot but have not done so for far too long. For birds photography has entirely taken over, it is much better for me as it is much more forgiving and I could never get drawings that I was truly happy with but do with the odd photo. I am also a doodler and whenever I...

    skuas - Norfolk, UK today

There were a few skuas kicking about off the coast today some at reasonable range. I was happy that most were arctic but another thought on one of them. Attached are a few very dodgy record shots of some of them. What IDs would people put to the skuas pictured below?

    spend my money... £800 budget

I have a bit of a fancy for some new binoculars (not that I am planing on getting rid of my current ones) so have been having a look around over the last couple of weeks. I found a good deal on a pair of 8x32 ELs but made the mistake of thinking for too long and missed them. So now I am trying...

not a tree sparrow - Norfolk, UK

At the weekend we had tree sparrow in the garden for the first time in about three years. Later the same day a second bird dropped in to the birdbath, I grabbed a few shots assuming tree sparrow but it appears to be a tree x house hybrid instead.

    some gulls... Norfolk, UK

I spent some time at the coast yesterday photographing gulls and looking through the images I am unsure on some of them. I suspect they will be straight forward ID and if so I am keen to learn what I should have been looking for.

7DmkII half press for AF question

I have just got my hands on a secondhand 7DmkII and my initial impression is good, however one thing is troubling me and I am trying to work out if it is just the way it is or something odd on this camera. On other cameras (when not using back button focusing) if I half depress the shutter...

Upgrading for a 7D which way to go?

I am somewhat out of the loop with cameras and the likes as life has got in the way of photography for the last few years (or more). I currently shoot with a 7D which is a decent camera but I am considering adding another body and am wondering what the current favourites are? I know that the 7D...

Norfolk, UK - ID from dodgy photo...

This was posted in an ID group on FB and has numerous IDs suggested. I know what I think but was wondering what others make of it.

    Tascam DR-05x or DR-07x

I'm back again... After last year pondering many options for recording I ended up getting the Zoom H4 with a shotgun mic which I then returned! While it was clearly a good set up I found that if I was out and about I wanted to have camera gear with me and the Zoom stayed in the bag. When I did...

considering getting a recorder, what should I buy...?

Following on from comments in a recent rare bird thread I have started to try and look into portable recorders and have so far managed to get lost and confused. Basically I am wondering how much I would need to spend to get a decent enough sound recorder (that doesn't weight too much), that I...

    Ficedula - Spurn, E Yorks

I didn't see this bird but the photos struck me. Is it just a pied or not? The large white patch on the primaries made me wonder.

One of each - Norfolk, UK

I have ideas on these two but would appreciate confirmation or correction. Macro - cloaked minor (a tatty one) Micro - Cochylis molliculana

    Spider - Norfolk UK

Just been hunting around a friends garden near Swaffham looking for minibeasts and stumbled upon a few spiders. Attached is a back of the camera shot of one that I think is Nigma walckenaeri but looking online it suggests that shouldn't be in the area. Is the ID wrong, the info out of date or...

    Micro ID - Norfolk

I still haven't ordered the micro ID guide (must get it soon) so rely on the web and apps to ID my micros but cannot find this one. Probably something common/obvious but I do have a special skill at overlooking things when trying to work out an ID...

    Just starting out...

Over the last year I have started to become more and more interested in moths. Last year my parents bought a moth trap so I have been involved in some of their trapping and seems some smart looking moths. The in recent months I have been out with a local moth group to a couple of events and have...

    Generator?

I am slowly getting hooked on mothing and keep visiting places where I wonder what might be lurking after dark. I know that I would be able to trap at a couple of these site but would need to invest in a generator to do this. I did have a look on ALS who I normally moth stuff form but their...

    Caper and crestie info request

Some friends are currently up in Scotland (staying near Loch Garten) and we're hoping to get both caper and crestie while up there but have not had any luck yet. They are in the area for another couple of days before heading to Mull so if anyone can recommend anywhere to try for either species...

    SX50 vs SX60

I know that both of these cameras already have active threads about them but I was wondering if anyone had shot with both and could offer some comparison. Is it worth upgrading to the 60 from the 50? Pros and cons of both models?
