    ?sanderling/little stint, Gower

The birds in the foreground are Sanderling. In the first photo, there are 3 Sanderling in the foreground, with a juvenile Dunlin second from the right. Among other features, you can see the Dunlin is slightly smaller than the Sanderlings, which straight away rules out Little Stint.

    Uk Marsh or willow tit?

I'm not sure it's identifiable on the strength of this photo: I think the pale spot might simply be an artefact.

    Ficedula

Very interesting discussion. We had a similar conundrum in Romania with a bird that briefly entertained thoughts of an out of range Semi-collared, see thread here.

Ficedula Flycatcher sp, Romania, 29th August

Thank you for a very helpful response. By way of context: we saw the bird and first impressions were split between Pied and Collared. I noticed the white tips to the median coverts so suggested Semi-collared. I thought at the time - but now realise I was mistaken - that the median covert bar was...

Ficedula Flycatcher sp, Romania, 29th August

Dear all. Just back from a superb birding trip to Romania with Sakertours. Lots of good birds but one conundrum was this Ficedula flycatcher sp in the Danube Delta. The group reached an ID conclusion at the time, but having done some more reading I am now wavering, so would be very interested to...

Alpine birding Zermatt, Switzerland, 30 July - 2nd August

Thanks John. I should say that you can still buy a railway pass in Switzerland, but I wasn't there for long enough for it to make sense financially.

Alpine birding Zermatt, Switzerland, 30 July - 2nd August

No problem. I should add that I suspect part of the problem here may be a question of where to draw the line. I spent a bit of time looking at the sparrows and it seemed to be that maybe 50% looked intermediate between House and Italian (e.g. trace of white eyebrows and dark crown but with some...

Alpine birding Zermatt, Switzerland, 30 July - 2nd August

Hi Richard. Attached I've got a photo of a hybrid and a photo of one apparent Italian Sparrow. If you check sightings on ebird for the Zermatt area there are quite a lot of Italian Sparrow sightings, plus it features in several other trip reports I've read. best, Jonathan

Alpine birding Zermatt, Switzerland, 30 July - 2nd August

Alpine birding in Zermatt, Switzerland, 30 July - 2nd August Dear all. I thought I'd post a report of my recent visit to Zermatt in the Swiss Alps in case it is of use to others. So basically as part of my ongoing attempt at whittling down the list of "regular European species I haven't seen...

    2019 eBird/Clements taxonomy update - convergence with IOC/HBW mentioned

OK, thank you, understood. Was not aware of the connection between Cornell and Clements but that makes sense now.

    2019 eBird/Clements taxonomy update - convergence with IOC/HBW mentioned

Sorry if this is a dumb question but, as a relative newcomer to ebird, I'd be curious to know why ebird doesn't simply adopt IOC taxonomy? I've recently been transferring my entire life list onto ebird which, while useful in terms of list management, has meant I've "lost" a handful of species...

    Fife Waders

Yes defo Green Sandpipers. As per what Andrews says, I don't think I've ever seen more than 2 together in Scotland, so a good record. At "The Wilderness" I presume?

    Easy/reliable Snow Finch sites

Thank you everyone for suggestions, very helpful. Am erring towards Karwndel, as it's not an area I know at all, seems a nice place, and looks like it has good chances of success.

    Easy/reliable Snow Finch sites

Dear all. I'm thinking of doing a quick visit to somewhere in Europe at some point in 2019 purely to try to get Snow Finch (a species I am yet to see). However, I'm a bit unclear as to where I could go that would maximise my chances of success, but am assuming somewhere in Switzerland or French...

    Red-necked Nightjar in Algarve

Yes. Just the one but saw it well as it drifted across the road in the headlights.

Got it! RNN on my list! Thanks again for advice!

    Red-necked Nightjar in Algarve

Thanks Simon for your very helpful response to my query. What you say is broadly in line with what I anticipated, so I'll give Quinta da Rocha a go and may also take an evening stroll out west from Praia da Rocha as well (I know the area you mean: have visited in the daytime before).

    Red-necked Nightjar in Algarve

Ola todos, I've done quite a lot of birding in Portugal over the past ten years or so but one relatively "common" species that I haven't yet connected with is RN Nightjar. I'm going to be in the Algarve - based in Praia da Rocha - for a week or so later this month (mostly non-birding) and am...

    Bearded Tits

Not exactly up to date info but in the late 90s I used to see them regularly, and usually without too much effort, from the end of the track that leads SE out of Errol past "Tay Lodge". There were some raised bits a few hundred yards beyond Tay Lodge (see attached map) where you could look NE...

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

The bird at Portas de Rodão hasn't been seen for a few years though, unless I'm mistaken, so assume that's not a viable option for them.

    Tayforth Birding

Visiting my mum in Fife at the moment and had a lovely day on the east coast. Mostly standard stuff at the Eden nature centre (Ruff, Peregrine, 3 Osprey, Canada Geese, and Little Egret was a long overdue Fife tick!). At Kinshaldy/Tenstmuir was very pleasantly surprised to see 2 Black-throated...

LPN Centre, Castro Verde, Baixo Alentejo

Thanks Simon for your characteristically informative and enthusiastic response. From the centre I walked south-east along a track but I think I missed the left turn north towards the old farm buildings, which means I overshot and ended up approaching a further set of farm buildings further to...

LPN Centre, Castro Verde, Baixo Alentejo

Dear all. Today en route from the Algarve back to Lisbon I popped to the LPN Centre - the Centro de Educação Ambiental Vale Gonçalinho - about 7km north of Castro Verde. This was my second visit (my first was in 2013) and again I was struck by the relative ease with which one can see the key...
