Perched Raptor, Kinabatangan River, Sabah, Malaysia, 28 Sept. '23

Thanks to all! During our 3 days on the Kinatabagan River in Sabah we saw several adult and immature W-BSEs. This one from the back side fooled me.

Perched Raptor, Kinabatangan River, Sabah, Malaysia, 28 Sept. '23

Hoping for help with this back view of a raptor I'm having trouble with. Uncertain whether the tail:wings ratio and the whitish wing coverts (shoulders) are diagnostic or just more variable noise. Thanks...

    Sunbird - Sepilok, Sabah, Malaysia

A couple of off angle shots of what I think is a red-throated sunbird but could be a brown-throated? I lean toward the former given the separation of the iridescent and nonstructural colored feathers on the back better matches the illustration in Phillips and Phillips. 22 Sept. '23 at...

Soaring Raptors, Menara Kayangan (Tower of Heaven) - near Lahad Datu, Sabah, Malaysia

At the turn-off from the main highway for the road to Danum Valley is the entrance for Menara Kayangan, which is ~1/2 way up Mt. Silam. I highly recommend as the platform in front of the tower is potentially a good site for soaring raptors. The morning I was there conditions weren't great with...

Juvenile Night Heron - Lahad Datu, Sabah, Malaysia

Thanks! I looked at a lot of pics of both before posting and still was scratching my head a bit. Those two Lab-of-O photos make it clear. Mahalo!

Juvenile Night Heron - Lahad Datu, Sabah, Malaysia

I'm uncertain whether one can distinguish between the Rufous (Nankeen) and Black-crowned juveniles. Hope one of you can.

    Soaring raptor Sepilok, Borneo

Excuse the miserable shots that I've lightened and cropped radically to try to see some field marks. 22 September 2023 above the Rainforest Discovery Center.

I don't know what else it could be other than a juvenile yellow-bellied prinia.

Borneo, Kinabalu Ntl Prk, Sabah, Malaysia

Here are a few more that confirmation of my IDs for these first-time birds would be appreciated. One of the originals was horribly under- exposed and I've radically lightened what I think is a Pale Blue Flycatcher. I think the bulbul is a Pale-faced bulbul and the other is a golden-naped barbet...

Borneo - Kinabalu Natl. Park, Sabah, Malaysia 18 Sept. '23

Shot taken at the point on the mountain where climbers begin the ascent. Fairly certain this is a Sunda Bush Warbler but wanted to get the opinion from those more familiar with the area's birds. As I work my way through the 3,301 shots taken I'm sure I'll be back for more help. Terima kasih!

Shorebirds, Iwahig Penal Farm, Palawan, Philippines 6 & 7 March 2023

There were several of the first scolopacids, what I convinced myself were Common Greenshanks, actively feeding in the transitional rice paddy. I'm uncertain about the plover in the 2nd pic with the common sandpiper on the left. Thanks...

Shorebird, Iwahig Prison, Palawan, Philippines 7 Mar '23

Cropped only, lousy long shot. I'm not up to speed on 'old world' shorebirds. My best guess is green? Thanks...

Egret ID near Sabang, Palawan, Philippines

Yet another white egret - using the gape - eye relationship this appears to be a great egret? Allen's maps show that they are not found one Palawan. Any help appreciated!

    Palawan questions

I just returned and for 5), according to what the locals told me the hike into the park from Sabang was not possible given damage from a recent typhoon. As far as field guides, I used the fairly new Birds of the Philippines by Desmond Allen. Not the greatest but OK. A couple I met in Sabang had...

    Egret ID: Sabang, Palawan, Philippines

I suspect this may be a Chinese egret, though would like some input with those more familiar with the species. Early March this year in marsh/rice paddy habitat. Clearly larger than nearby little egret. Thanks...

Subic Bay, Luzon, Philippines, coastal forest - Ilanin Rd.

Thanks gents, based on ebird and Allen's status, seems as if grey-streaked is more likely.

    Philippines Feb-Mar '23 (Candaba, Luzon)

Just back from near 3 weeks, Luzon-Palawan-Cebu-Bohol, with several pics I'll need expert help with - I know I'm able to tap a wealth of knowledge and greatly appreciate the help given my largely US experience. This individual was at the Candaba rice-fields (RIP Candaba Bird Sanctuary...
