Debatable-it wasn't behaving like Crow. There are Ravens in Knaresborough, but I don't know if they wander much.

Would anybody expect to see a Raven over Wetherby, end of Wharfedale? I thought I saw one this week and a friend got this shot of something soaring high.

    Yorkshire Birding

Went to Bempton last week, plenty of Gannets, including unfledged juveniles,Peregrine and my first Brambling of the year on the feeders.Found a Yellow Brow inland later in the week(no i won't say where),but Bempton is no good if you haven't got a head for heights. Tip-if you park at any of...

Good Sand Martin roost at St Aidens, but a bit new(IMHO).Do that and Fairburn-they're so close.

    Good Merlin sites?

I hate to say this, but the"game" shooters use them for target practise. It's time the police wildlife officers got out and hammered the gamekeepers.High time shooting becomes a licensed "sport" with draconian penalties for the wrong doers.

    Good Merlin sites?

I agree about sensitivity, particularly in Nidderdale, but I have seen one up there before.

    Yorkshire Birding

Blackbirds I've got a new resident in the garden-99% certain she's a female blackbird, but plumage is a little different.Paler "eyebrows",redder colour bur still brown, black beak-is this one of our winter visitors,or just a variation? Also,I've just signed the beet factory petition. As a local...

    Help with locations for recording?

Traffic noise doesn't half carry doesn't it!The only places I could suggest would be Wheldrake,if you like wetlands(and it can be a bit of a muddy trek out into the best bit) or head up into the Dales.

Terrible photo, but I wouldn't argue with this lady over her Tree Sparrow---

    Yorkshire Birding

Could be my myopia-but the size comparison comes from the bird being chased! I'll have to leave my bins where I can get at them-not in the car!We get regular Red Kite, Buzzard,Kestrel and Sparrowhawk here, and I'm sure it wasn't one of them. On a different note how do YOU tell a Kite from a...

Are all sparrows of the devil?

House Sparrows? My colony of Tree Sparrows have taken over the garden. They tolerate the House Sparrows, but the only "aggressor" they will back off to are the juvenile Goldfinches. Of course ,the larger, more clumsy, visitors ,such as the Collared Doves ,they just wait for them to go. We have a...

    Yorkshire Birding

Hawks in Wetherby The cries alerted me-and ,high over the house ,was a hawk chasing a Swift.First instinct said a Hobby, but the cries sounded like a Peregrine. Any thoughts? I know Peregrines have bred around here-maybe Lawts has seen something from the edge of the estate?

Whinchats Went up to top of Wharfedale last week, which is normally a good spot for Whinchats, but nothing!Loads of Dippers in the river at Yockenthwaite bridge made up for the disappointment though.

Back Garden Doing well today-Yellowhammer visited this morning-the Reed Bunting seem to have taken up residence again, and I'm watching a nice Buzzard overhead.Working nights does have it's compensations. Now all I need is the Barn Owl at work again.

Red Kites The Red Kites are becoming a regular urban sight round here-they seem to range into Harrogate past the hospital and over the Stray-and often in the middle of Wetherby-Morrison's car park for a birding site---

House Crow Chasing Away A Black Kite

We don't have Black Kites over here , but Red Kites are locally common. I can tell when they are overhead by the commotion the Crows and Magpies make.Funnily enough-they don't bother about the Buzzards at all! This behaviour appears to be general -I wonder if Kites are nest raiders? The locals...
